for more information on this topicThe Forum RecommendsSo you want your lab to be a stud dog

I would like to breed my 5 1/2 year old male black English lab. He is from strong bloodlines. His mother was a field champion in Canada and his dad was a show dog. I'm hoping to find a black English lab with similar bloodlines. He has a wonderful temperament, is an amazing hunter and the sweetest member of our family. I live in Montana and would love to find a female close by but I am willing to travel. I also would like pick of the litter. Please let me know if you have a female you think is a perfect fit and I can send you pictures of him.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like your boy has some strong lines in there which could make his potential offspring of interest, along with a good temperament. That's very important. Before you breed from him, however, he needs to have several health tests done. Any reputable breeder will insist that these are carried out before the mating takes place so that the puppies have the best chance of being fit and healthy.

These include, but are not limited to:
    - hip scores (should be low and fairly even)
    - elbow scores (must be zero)
    - eye tests (often called Optigen) (must be clear)
    - exercise-induced collapse (EIC) (a maximum of one dog out of the breeding pair can be a carrier)
    - progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) (a maximum of one dog out of the breeding pair can be a carrier)

Other tests that are often carried out are:
    - centronuclear myopathy (CNM) (a maximum of one dog out of the breeding pair can be a carrier)
    - hereditary nasal parakeratosis (HNPK) (a maximum of one dog out of the breeding pair can be a carrier)

The Kennel Club will have more information, and here is an article from our main site: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/so-you-want-your-labrador-to-be-a-stud-dog/

    Good luck with your search.

Done and done with the tests. Passed with flying colors. Trust me you'd be hard pressed to find a better stud out there.

I think there are very few of us on these forums that live in the States. Most of these kind people are from the UK or other Countries.

    What I might suggest is going to the American Kennel Club and try getting listed for the Breeder search program. I'm not a Breeder myself so I can't provide you with any other information other than a link that I found;

    Good luck!

What do you do with your dog? Show in conformation? Field trial? Some other venue to show he's more than just a pretty boy? I know our breeder mentors others wanting to start out in breeding, and I would expect that from anyone new to the game. Are you a member of your local Lab club? That's where you'd network and people would learn about you and your dog. Yes, photos would be nice. :)

I didn't post my question to get into a discussion with anyone other than someone who has a female dog they are interesting in breeding. Please don't comment if you don't actually have a female English lab with great bloodlines you would like to breed.

I think that people are just interested and are trying to be helpful :) That's what this forum tends to be like....people just enjoy talking about dogs with other like minded people.

I think that joining your local Labrador club would be a good idea. Also, most people wanting to breed from well bred bitches are fussy about which stud male they choose and that means many will want to see a record of achievement in the show ring. A good pedigree and good health test results provide a great start but breeders also want to see that the sire can impress the judges. Your Labrador club can help you get started with showing your dog.

From that I can conclude you have not come to this forum to engage in discussion or get support in your breeding venture and are here specifically to advertise stud dog services.
For that reason I am closing this thread. I have put a small amendment in the rules to cover this issue, as follows

    Section 1b
    b) Commercial and advertising. The forum and its private message system may not be used to promote commercial products and services, or to advertise puppies or dogs for sale, rehoming, or rescue. However, you may put your own website in your signature line, provided it meets the link guidelines (below)
