Where do you see it checking American? I just did a test and get this - although I have a feeling this is just from my built-in browser spell checker?

The spellchecker is usually the device your using. I found the best devices were my windows phone and anything running Android. The iPad has the worst spell checker of them all.
My windows phone and Fire HD learned from what I wrote and actually anticipated what I wanted to say. Talk about big brother watching you, I felt he was reading my mind.

Colour, realise , centre, theatre, programme. Sent from my laptop all are underlined in red indicating a misspell. It is strange because the programmes I use on my laptop (Word Outlook) use the English spellcheck.

The spellchecker will be program specific. Check the settings of your browser.

Thanks. I checked the settings of my browser and because I use Google Chrome it looks as if I am stuck with the US spell check!

Glad you worked it out. I use Chrome and am nicely set with British English, thankyouverymuch. I can't be doing with all those Zs and missing Us ;)
