I've been trying to find out whether there is an upper age limit for stud dogs, or any general recommendations.

Does anyone know of any reasons why it might not be advisable to use a stud dog who was ten or eleven years of age, for example, if he is still fit and healthy? I can find lots of information about guidelines and rules regarding the recommended age for breeding from bitches, but much less about stud dogs!

I would guess that that'd be fine. If he's fit and active at that age then that is a good thing too. Personally I'd be more inclined to avoid a young dog that hadn't stood the test of time.

Riley's dad was pretty old when he sired riley's litter. It was one of his last litters. He's a bit doddery now but still around - just!
I'm with Rachel as long as they're fit and healthy I'd think it was fine. I'd be interested to know how many litters he'd sired though and if there was any breed guidance in place to avoid popular sires dominating the gene pool.

I think fit and healthy is more important than age. I would just be checking how many litters he has sired, when and the health of the pups produced.
