When I moved into my house, seagulls were nesting on one of the chimneys. We we moved in, and I wanted all the fires to be opened up, and in addition installed wood burners etc. Called in chimney sweep expert person - some of the fires had sort of closures on them which needed to be opened for the first time in decades. In one bedroom, under the seagull nest chimney (what turned out to be) 8 black bin liners worth of bird poop, bird nest and bird debris poured out of the chimney onto the carpet when the guard was opened.....yuk!

Seagulls were swiftly evicted from the chimneys and guards put over....

I find it weird that people are scared of such harmless things like dogs there are really dangerous things out there. More people get killed every year by cars but no one would talk of banning them.

Can we add chickens to the list as well, please? It's not like I'd run a mile from them, but they're seriously creepy.

I think bats are cute. Their little faces! :) :) :)

I was always very nervous around dogs growing up. I think my parents, who aren't dog people, created the fear for me. I only started to feel ok around dogs when I met my friend's chocolate lab 8 years ago as his beautiful temperament and character won me over (hence our decision to get a chocolate lab). Since having Ella and meeting a lot more dogs I have started to realise that genuinely "scary" dogs are very few and far between but I still have to control that apprehensive feeling as a dog approaches us in the park.

I was attacked by a chow when i was about 4 it was a bad bite to my shoulder and neck, I still have the scar its like a tooth shaped dimple in my shoulder. Far form making me scared i became obsessed with dogs and even had an imaginary one called bings who lived under the dinning table I fed him chocolate cake. He was black with green eyes. I have always had a perverse nature so looking back I'm not surprised I became fasinated.

I love dogs and wanted one from then on and had to wait 20 years before I could have my own.

I can understand you apprehension but people are a lot more dangerous. Dogs will hurt you out of fear but people will do it because they can and enjoy it. Theres a lot more bad monkeys about than dogs

Bats are really cute I love them and like walking when they are swooping about. Chickens don't scare me i just see them as food and they know it.

I think the only animal that ever scared me at a deep level was a male chim, he looked at me in such a knowing way. He would kill me or hurt me if he could, I knew he hated me.

Don't worry, I know this and I'm a LOT better but I guess that's fear for you.
    It's irrational :)

    Reminded of this thread today.....

A young chap came to deliver the groceries, from a very well known online groceries delivery company. He said ' where shall I put them?' and I asked him to put them in the kitchen. I called Charlie to heel (all this time I'd been stood with the door open, Charlie was stood quietly behind me wagging his tail) and moved back from the door and walked into the kitchen. Charlie continued to wag his tail, stood quietly beside me. Charlie doesn't bark when the doorbell goes, and the chap hadn't noticed him until I moved and Charlie moved with me.

The young chap, spying Charlie told me in a very firm voice to put my dog away because he was scared. I told him my dog wouldn't move towards him and he was perfectly safe (Charlie only jumps on friends, he is very well behaved around delivery people - he knows the difference). He said he couldn't come into the house unless I put the dog away. I told him to just leave the shopping on the doorstep then!

I honestly felt sorry for the chap, he really should get help if he can't walk past a quiet chocolate Labrador, gently wagging his tail, making no move towards him at all....

My best friend can't walk past a tank of crabs in a restaurant or supermarket. It's not as if they're going to jump out and grab her, and she's generally very rational, but I guess these things become so deep-seated that they become part of who we are.

hmm....it all seems a bit 'hysterical' to me....still, I wasn't putting my dog away in his own house. Cheek of it. Either the chap is in the wrong job, or that company needs to change its advertising to 'kerbside delivery only for dog owners!".
