So we were back at the vets again this morning as Truffle's latest offering was watery and bloody :(
We've been struggling to get the diarrhoea under control, thought we were winning a couple of days ago but obviously not.
She's had another antibiotic jab, plus some tablets for a longer course, and another syringe of probiotics too. If it doesn't clear up this time it's poo testing.
Poor wee bean, she's only had a couple of days of normal poo in the fortnight we've had her. It also means she can't have her second set of vaccinations tomorrow, so they're delayed too.
Anyone else's pup had this at the beginning?

Yep we are still going through it. We had blood for the first few days and have not had a formed poo since. We have had storm 3 weeks today. On her second lot of probiotics and had one lot of antibiotics. Vet has asked me to collect 3 days of poo sample. Did day 1 yesterday and waiting for her to poo again today (my husband threw this mornings poo away).

Why have they delayed jabs? Storm had her second one yesterday x

    Hi there,

Lots of puppies have tummy troubles at first, they go through a huge amount of change leaving their litters and settling into new homes ,it can really take their toll.Their immune systems are immature too so they can be susceptible to picking up bugs.I've read other members posts about vaccinations being delayed ,it's a shame because you so lookforward to taking them on their first walk ...but that will come, the main thing is to make sure there aren't any underlying issues going on and your vet seems to be working on that with you.
    Best Wishes
    Angela

Thanks for the reassurance Angela, and solidarity @knees78 :)
I think they've delayed the jabs as her system is coping with enough at the moment, and they think there might be some underlying infection. The vet said we should be ale to do them next week. It's a bit of a blow as we have a family campung trip booked in October, staying in a pod, and if she can't go on the grass I can't think how we'll manage. If it wasn't an international, meet-the-new-babies family gathering I'd have cancelled it ages ago. Arg!

Poor little thing, I hope you find out soon what's causing this. I'm surprised though that your vet hasn't asked for a stool sample before this. How does the vet know what to treat for, if she hasn't tested to find out what it is?

Good question! I presume she's going with "most likely cause", and trying the antibiotics first. If it doesn't improve over the weekend though, I plan to push them a bit with the testing.
Not that Truffle should have been able to catch it, but the vet nurse said they'd had far more gastro cases in this last week than usual, so perhaps there is some bug doing the rounds.
If she doesn't end up with vet phobia too, after 5 jabs in 2 weeks, I'll be really surprised

Only healthy dogs should be vaccinated.

Oh @Trufflepup so sorry to hear your little baby is poorly - fingers crossed your vet gets to the root cause (nearly said bottom of it then ;)). I too would push for poo testing (oh how my aims have changed since getting my pup!) as I would want to rule out things rather than a scatter gun approach, but that is just me! Keep us posted. Fingers crossed for you and for @knees78 too

@knees78 thanks, she's been on chicken and rice today and poo isn't liquid or bloody now, just really soft (tmi, sorry!). The worry- I keep expecting my hair to start falling out! If your vet vaccinated your pup, perhaps it was when she was a little better? I suppose they're weighing up the risks of leaving them unvaccinated as well.

One thing I noticed today was that she was eating an agapanthus seed pod, and quite a few of them seem to be missing, I have no idea if this could be the culprit but I have cut all the stalks off just in case. Clutching at straws!

@Samantha Jones thank you! I think the seed heads were tempting her, bobbing about in the breeze. They're all removed now, so that removes one possible cause anyway.

Oh I didn't know that about agapanthas. We have them along our front fence and Xena sometimes has a munch when we come back from a walk. No ill effects here, but I'll keep her away from now on.

Bailey has been a determined flower, seed and pod muncher i spent quite a while researching what I needed to worry about and what not! And if you look at the site - nope rose petals do not make the dogs breath smell nice!!! ;):D

Sorry to hear Truffle is still struggling. I went through about 4 months of diarrhoea and on and off bloody ones when we got Harley. We did get her stools tested which came back negative for infections. After months of going back and forth to the vets and only eating very gooey rice and boiled chicken we found out she had an allergy to wheat and some grains. We gave her about 6 very small meals of rice/chicken a day which helped, and only used chicken for treats. We also gave her prokolin prescribed by the vet. When we put her on a barf diet and later onto a grain free kibble her tummy settled.
I would push for your vet to get Truffle stools to rule out infection. Good luck and let us know how you get on

@Trufflepup we had 3 days of chicken and rice too. It stopped the blood and made it a little firmer. Still squelchy and hasn't really improved since and that was 2 1/2 weeks ago. Having said that when inspecting it while scooping into pots today (yuk) there is still the odd speckle of blood!

She hasn't had a firm poo since we've had her and she has had both 1st and 2nd vacs by 2 different vets. They did ask lots of questions about energy levels and appetite and she seems fine otherwise. In fact she is a monster today.

Hopefully the poo samples help! X

    Thanks everyone :)
On the chicken and rice she seems to be much better, there was an almost proper poo this morning hurrah! The kibble we have got for her is Orijen Puppy, so being grain-free should be ok. Having read @Nala 's info, I plan to bring it in a bit more slowly- vet said 24 hours of chicken and rice, but now I think I'll keep her on it for the whole weekend and then include sone kibble. Fingers crossed!
