As I have said previously, this behaviour caused us to change vet practices. Bailey was at the vet for vaccinations and being just a couple of months old was "mouthy". The vet grabbed him by his muzzle as he explained to me that Bailey must be shown who is the boss! Then he did it again! I have not been to them since, which is a shame as they looked after our previous dog Cooper for his entire 13 years.

Within a few days as I was waiting at a polling booth a woman came uninvited to look at Bailey. He jumped up-which I know is not ideal-but he was very young. She put her knee into his chest while telling me this is how to put a stop to this behaviour!
    I declined her "advice".

Our dogs rely on us to be their advocate and though I find it difficult to challenge people I am getting better at speaking up for him as he can't do it himself-well he can't in a socially acceptable way!

We wish one and all a safe and Merry Christmas & here's to a 2017 where everyone leaves the dog training to the dog owner:D

Thank you all for the support and Merry Christmas. I'm sure there are a lot of happy puppies today playing away with their new toys. SIL backed off after a minor standoff and Duggan has mellowed out with her new presence in the house. He views new people as potential playthings and once he realizes they aren't ( because we ask them to ignore negative behaviour ) he settles in quite nice. It just amazes me how every new person thinks they can "help train your dog" without having actually even read a book or attended a class and most of have given their dogs away because they couldn't handle them. Keep up the good work. Our dogs deserve it.

BevE. If I hear one more person tell me that kneeing in the chest is the only way to stop a dog from jumping I'm gonna start kneeing people in the chest and start telling them it's the only way to get people to stop training ineffective outdated techniques. I do get why people do these things. sometimes I want to kick my dog when he acts a certain way. I don't, but I watched my parents raise many dogs as pets and it was the norm. Now I have some insight and realize that outsmarting your dog and changing the behaviour is best. Our methods work over the long term and make better pets. Dogs are easy to train. Other People are not so much.

Well done @Johnny Walker glad all settled down for you. Just back from two days with my sister and brother-in-law - dogs played so nicely together the whole time and behaved beautifully - but if I had to listen to my bil shout at my dog once more . Trouble is Bailey just doesn't listen to shouts and bellows....but hey me and my OH know that so managed to stop any behaviour we didn't want - and amazingly their dog responded to our way too! So I laughed last!!!!

Its funny cause there is always that person who thinks they can teach your dog better and that their ways are more effective. My moms the same way and shes never owned or taken care of a dog before, and she tells me how her friends friend would have done it if kibs wasn't behaving (mainly smacking them with a newspaper... so annoyed.
