Maybe a more comfortable cone would help like one of these, I have one as Charlie spent over 7 weeks in a cone due to a foot injury, this one helped a lot and he never made a fuss having it put on, he slept in it and even ate with it on :)

If you can I wouldn't take the cone off and stick with it as he might nibble the area and infect it.

Could you get one of the inflatable Buster collars? That's what I used for Willow post-spay and they're infinitely more comfortable than the cones.

Hope Axel recovers soon! Quinn also bumped into walls and was a bit sucky. I slept on her dog bed beside crate  the things we do...

The comfy cone is comfortable and soft, much better than the hard plastic ones the vet gives you.

Try telling that to Willow. I put one on her to stop her licking her leg when it needed leaving uncovered and the inflatable collar wasn't enough to stop her. She put her nose on the floor, so the large end of the cone was completely on the floor and just stood there, like an ostrich. Broke my heart - although I must admit I did laugh a bit. She looked ridiculous, but so forlorn, so it came off and I just managed her instead. I wish I'd taken a picture :D

Aw bless her. That's why I didn't go for the inflatable collar it doesn't look deep enough to stop nibbling. It's weird really, Charlie didn't have a problem at all. When I took it off to give him short breaks as he was wearing it for so many weeks, I would just say "collar" and he would sit for my to put it back on, he wasn't upset at all, of course he did get lots of nice treats :)

I suppose all dogs are unique, some are fine with some things where as others just aren't, a bit like humans. :)

It's fine for stuff on the body, but not on the ends of the legs. Especially for a leggy monster like Willow! Her injury was below her hock, so easy to get to, even with the soft collar on, because she just bent it back. Once she got her nose off the floor ;)

Thank you @charlie and @snowbunny. I'll check our pet stores to see if they have something like that to help Axel feel more comfortable

I took the cone off again just now to see how he does.

He is VERY bouncey and excited this afternoon. Like nothing happened yesterday. Wish he understood that he needs to calm down until he heals o_O

I believe it takes time for hormone levels to reduce so you won't see the effects immediately.

Hope his wound heals really quickly and you can get back to normal life. I know what a hard time you had with the decision.
