Hello all, Tilly's been having anal glands problems now first an exploding anal sac then an abscess and now she had skin leisons around her anal area like little holes everywhere she's been on anti biotic for abit now and I've been cleaning the area with warm salt water for the past 4 week the vet said if it hasn't cleared up they had try some special but expensive tablets for 3 months I can't remember the name but alisations get this a lot with their anal area has anyone else had this problem it's been going on nearly a year with tilly. Also does anyone have canagan dry dog food grain free? I'm thinking of changing from burns to that as anal glands issues can relate to grain diets
I'm so sorry, that sounds horrible. I can't offer any advice, just wanted to say I hope you get this sorted out for poor Tilly.
So sorry to hear. If you're changing foods, have you considered raw meat and raw meaty bones? They usually form nice hard poos which I think are good for anal glands.

Hi sorry if this is gonna be long. Corona has had anal gland issues that started at 2 1/2 months old. She was licking and they were expressing randomly. They found that the liquid was thick and green so she was put on a 10 day course of meds. Checked again to find only a very slight improvement. This time they infused the anal glands directly with meds. No antibiotics by mouth this round. Checked 2 weeks later and had to infuse again. During this time, we decided to try a food change despite her poops being pretty normal. A terrible tummy issue then started and lasted over a month. She was put on different meds for her tummy so I'm not sure if that helped the anal glands issue or not but every time they checked them, they were empty and couldn't say for sure if the issue was completely resolved. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, a little over 5 months old, after many attempts at different foods, none that agreed with her, we decided to go back to her original brand that she came home on. Not a week and half into the switch, Corona starts scooting and scratching at her behind, and it was flaming red. She also developed a bladder infection at the same time. The vet checked her glands and said they weren't terrible, expressed easily, but they were a little thick. She wasn't concerned about them at all but a light bulb went on. Corona definitely has food allergies, there is no more doubts. (She has had 9 infections total, a mix of everything) We are now in the process of switching her food again to a single source protein that is grain free. We are first switching her to a vet prescribed hypoallergenic food to settle her system and her poor tummy then proceeding to the new food after a couple of weeks. At the beginning of all this, my vet shared Corona's history on a nation wide vet site to get opinions on treatment since she was a puppy. A dermatologist responded that almost all anal gland infections are due to a food allergy. We were all skeptical especially since my vet truly believes that puppies are too young to have developed allergies. She has now since changed her tune. Corona is still on 25% old food, 75% hydrolyzed protein for a couple more days, but she has completely stopped scooting and licking her behind. If I were you, I would definitely consider a grain free food. Your poor pup must be in a lot of pain with all these bum issues and it's no fun to watch as a mum either. I've done a lot of research online and that dermatologist has a lot of info backing up his claim. Check out some for yourself. I hope you can get this resolved asap. Good luck
It's horrible isn't it ! It doesn't seem to be her actual anal glands it's little holes around her anal area if I can get a picture I will because she dislikes me when trying to clean it one of the vets thinks it 'anal Furunculosis ' but I thought it might of been caused by licking her bum after eating poo which I've been on top of lately and she hasn't but still no improvement but the vet said it wouldn't of caused the skin leisions ? Anyway thanks everyone will keep you updated
Going to take her Monday and start these tablets long term their pretty pricey but 90% of dogs respond well and it's for 3 months thank god for pet insurance
Poor girl . I hope the tablets help. Harley had lots of tummy problems for the first 6+ months we had her. It ended up that she is wheat intolerant and possibly other grains. We eventually put her on a BARF diet (Natures menu) and no problems ever since.
I'm just shocked as nobody else's dog has ever had anal Furunculosis worries me abit too as it's unheard of in labs but common in German Shepard
Poor Tilly and poor you! I just read up on anal furunculosis and I can understand why you would be so worried. It sounds like it's a complicated and painful issue to deal with but there was some encouraging literature also. It sounds like a greater percentage respond to medications than those that actually end up needing surgery. I pray that Tilly is one that falls in this group. Keep us updated and hang in there!
