Interesting to read the US Standard. The Australian one is the same as the UK one.

As far as shiny goes - my previous boy, who was black, had a very good coat (thick, hard on top, tonnes of undercoat) and he was a shiny boy. So I think you can have a good coat and a good shine :)

It's in the extended Australian Breed Standard. But now, looking at it again, I'm not sure my interpretation is correct. It's an extrapolation of the presence of a good undercoat that the top finish is matt, it may not necessarily be the case:

"The under coat is generally lighter than the top coat and can vary in colour from dull charcoal through to all shades of mouse, to grey in liver coloured dogs, and pale yellow or cream in yellows. It does not show through the top coat but usually gives a matt finish."

    Umm....I think.

Hmmm, a bit ambiguous isn't it. So that's in the breed extension document. I'd take that to mean that the undercoat is matt but it does read as if it lend a matt-ness to the top coat. Not sure how it'd do that if it doesn't actually 'show through'. We need a show judge to show up here :)

I know! It's not at all clear .

How can we be expected to tell whether these show judges are doing their job properly! ;D ;D ;D
