We phased out Obi's crate when he was about 14 months old. We have no real room for it either. No dramas with phasing it out.

With Penny I might wait till she's 100% recovered from the op, so she doesn't have to handle too much change at once. She seems fairly fond of her crate. Sounds like it's going really well though :)

I wonder if the hot weather has affected her so she is removing her blankets, I know Hattie has been sleeping half way up the stairs and wouldn't use her bed and Charlie was removing his blanket from his bed and digging it into a mound to flop on too in a cooler part of the house ::)

Penny looks lovely behind her baby gate, good luck with the crate phasing but like Rachael said she might need the security of her crate whilst she is recovering :) x

Yeah I've seen those and it's the cost that puts me off, though I can see how good they are as they'll fit most size of doorways. I would be wary about the soft ones though as I already have one of these for the bottom of the stairs http://www.kiddicare.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productdisplay0_10751_-1_126109_10001?_$ja=tsid:49662&cm_mmc=googlemerchantcenter-_-nmppla-_-NULL-_-NULL&gclid=COeH2vi2l78CFQfJtAodSBoA8g&gclsrc=aw.ds
When she's really trying she can pull it down and I would be worried to use one to confine her in an area for a long time.

Yes, they are an investment, alright. I wouldn't have, only intend to always have them at the bottom of the stairs. The ones I have "lock", and the fixings are bolted into place, so the fabric is as solid as, well, a solid thing.

Sounds like it going well! Simba doesn't have any blankets, but he does like to ruffle up the hallway rug to lie on ::). It's just a matter of getting comfy, I suppose...

We have as you know, a very similar set up, and is working fine apart from the fact of a drawer in the kitchen had mysteriously been opened, we have popped a bit of Olbas oil on the front and hope this will deter him!

Molly removes her vetbed from the crate and trails hair and dust all over the place including the garden. She did look funny this morning. I was throwing the ball for her and she was trying to run after it with her vet bed in her mouth. Not the elegant, athletic hound I had imagined

My last dog used to remove her bedding from her crate and then lay there sucking and she was a happy confident little soul.

Kate - just came across this - just wanted to put a warning up about the olbas oil which is really toxic for humans, and can cause death if accidentally ingested by young children, or even absorbed through nose or eye membranes.
Don't want to worry you particularly, as when I googled it there were some posts that said it was safe for dogs, so now I don't really know.
Just wanted to suggests some caution :-\

Thank you or the heads up, I had no idea and tbh would rather not risk it. The kitchen stank when we used it anyhow, have ditched the olbas oil, and have ordered a spray deterrent online, in the vain hope of saving some of our skirting boards! ;D ::)

Kind of glad about that Kate.
I was pretty shocked to find how harmful things like Olbas Oil and Karvol are if not used in the right way.
I used washing up liquid with chilli powder in it painted on my wooden areas, did the trick. Others used just the washing up liquid. Relatively easily washes off with hot water when the risk has passed.
Bitter Aloe spray seems most popular.
    Good luck! :)
