Why can't I upload an avatar? I am a member of several forums and have one on all of them but this forum just won't let me upload - always "too large or not an avatar" but won't tell me what it calls an avatar or what size is correct! Very frustrating! I've reduced my avatar right down to 150 X 100 pixels and that is TINY!!

I'm not sure if you can upload an avatar directly. Mine is a link. Has anyone else uploaded one?

I've tried and tried and eventually got it to work but it won't accept a pic from my Saved Pics just a direct link from Photobucket .... think its a glitch somewhere

I have actually managed to sort it out folks, but not very "user friendly" just saying "too big or not an avatar"! Mind you, it looks a bit squashed! :-\

I think it is squashed because it wants a square image. I'll have a look in the morning, see if I can figure it out. :)

    Re: Avatar again!

So I messed around trying to upload an avatar and in the end I was successful by resizing a jpg file down to 37 x 50 pixels which is 4.05KB

The previous failed attempt was 50 x 67 pixels. Hope this helps!!

    Re: Avatar again!

Have had another go as my avatar looked significantly smaller than others and got it up to 48 x 65 so around 65 pixels is probably the max down the long edge. My picture is portrait so I could crop it to make it square and around 65 x 65 and that would probably be it.....

    Re: Avatar again!

Having tinkered with the avatar settings this afternoon I've come to the same conclusion as Barbara - 65 pixels seems to be the limit for the size of the avatar picture.

So, for those wanting to use a picture from their PC.
    1. Pick a picture.
    2. Resize it to fit in with the 65 pixel limit (there are various freeware software packages that will do this *)
    3. Go to 'Modify Profile' and then 'Forum Profile'.
    4. In the 'Personalized Picture' section select 'Upload an avatar' (currently the last of 4 options).
    5. Click on the 'Browse' button and select the resized image.
    6. Click the 'Change profile' button at the bottom of the page.

    * I'm using FastStone Photo Resizer.

Can Avatars only be uploaded on a PC or laptop? I've been trying on my ipad but it doesn't seem to work so do I need to get the old laptop out? Thanks :) :) :)

    Keeping forum costs down

Images take up a lot of space on the server. And I have to pay a correspondingly large amount for our server space as the forum grows.

Most forums fund extra server space by advertising. And if members want more facilities (for example to upload photos directly to the server, larger images etc) then I would need to sell advertising space on the forum to pay for that.

So far, members have expressed a preference to avoid advertising and keep forum costs down.
