We lost our Dobler on 5/10, four days before his 15th birthday. We were fortunate to share his wonderful life, and he gave us all much love and devotion. Even on his last morning he was 'smiling' and enjoying the sunshine.
People on this forum said he would let us know when it was time, and he did. He had been slowing down, falling occasionally, but never complained about arthritis-related pain. We never wanted him to suffer. Sunday he started going under the dining room table to nap, and we noticed he couldn't get out through the chairs. Then Monday night, he started to bark and cry when we left him to go to sleep (he couldn't get up the stairs anymore). He was bewildered and disoriented, and suffering in a way we couldn't bear. We stayed up with him all night, but knew that he was telling us it was time to go. After extensive conversations with the vet, we said goodbye Tuesday afternoon.
The house is so quiet. The wonderful greeting and "so glad you're home" tail wag is gone. We will miss his ability to drop a ball and then run away with it when a person got close to it, his gentleness, his ability to take everyone's paper napkin off their laps during meals, his acceptance of everyone, and everything, at anytime. He was a true companion dog.

So sorry :( I'm sure that was such a hard day and that the days since haven't really been any easier at all.

He sounds like such a wonderful boy. I can picture him nicking the paper napkins.
