Yay, Ella passed her beginner class today! For this class we had to walk at heal in a big circle, right about turn, left about turn (I found the lead swapping thing behind my back pretty challenging), left turn right turn, halt and sit, drop, stand at heal plus returning to our dog when they're sitting in front of us (just the stepping to the side so they're at heal - apparently we do the walking around the back of them thingy in a later class).

Clearly I need to start learning the correct terminology for some of these things!

    Ella was a star!

I'm not getting carried away though, it sounds a little more difficult to pass than it actually was. At this stage we only had to demonstrate that we could perform all of these commands when asked but they weren't expected to be perfect the entire time. For example, if we are walking at heal with a loose lead, have a loony run to the side but come back and continue walking at heal when asked we can still pass in this class. Obviously in later classes this would be a fail.

Here's our girl showing off her ribbons ☺

JulieT the best part was having a win for the choccys. There was a bloke in the class with his yellow lab and at the start of the first class he said "good luck with a chocolate lab, I've heard they're the dumb labs". Well guess who didn't pass today

Haha it's all good Oberon , he seems to be one of those dog owners that assumes a half-hour session once a week will be enough to train his dog! He must have missed the part when they told us the weekly sessions were to train us humans so that we could go away and train our dogs!

The stupid ones are the people who believe that kind of codswallop.

One of these days (a long time from now!) I will complete my trio and start my own little campaign at proving them all wrong. For now, you can carry that torch. :)

    Good girl Ella!

(Just for the record; one of my previous dogs was a chocolate labrador / spaniel cross; I think he was the cleverest dog I have ever met.)
