Poppy is clear for CNM (centronuclear myopathy), but it turns out she is a carrier for SD2 (skeletal dysplasia - dwarfism). Who would have known?

Worryingly, the dog I had looked out as a possible stud is also a carrier of SD2. Without these test we would never have known, and there would have been a possibility that their pups might have been affected. :(

Wow. If I wasn't convinced before about all this testing lark, I certainly am now.

Still waiting for the results for HPNK and EIC.

    Wow, that's big news.

So are you starting a hunt for a new stud?

And this means you may find a boy that could give you a mix of colours then? Didn't the original stud guarantee only black pups?

You could end up with a mini Poppy.... ;)

That's right. So now we are looking for a lovely dog with full health clearance, great temperament, good conformation, good pedigree, good working results - AND the chance of some lovely red/gold pups!

We don't want much, really... ;)

Just goes to prove the importance of tests. I'm sure you'll find a new stud that meets all Poppy's requirements - handsome, fun to be with - and that meets your health requirements. Good luck with the doggy dating sites :)

Are Labradors pretty easy to breed? I don't mean all the checks etc that a conscientious breeder performs, but I mean the actual - er act - itself?

I've heard some breeds, Staffies for example, are notoriously difficult and the boys don't tend to have much idea of what to do. My sister's old Staffie met a bitch on heat once and got aroused ... then mounted her head....

    Gosh....interesting. Although disappointing too.
What a massive job this has been so far and not even a twinkle of puppies yet.

Well, I'm feeling a bit down in the dumps about it this morning. All the dogs I'm interested in seem to be carriers for SD 2, or don't have great hip scores, or live up near Hamburg, or are already 12 years old... Sigh.

Ah, Karen, cheer up. You'll find the right dog, never fear. You are doing it the right way, not the easy way - and future generations of families with healthy dogs will have good reasons to thank people like you in years to come.

What about artificial insemination, which would give you a much wider choice, don't know if that's a nutty idea.....

Thanks for the encouragement Julie! :) Good news is we have MONTHS to do our shopping in. Months in which to obsess about hip scores and pedigrees... ;)

Artificial insemination... Hmmm... Have never heard of that being used in our circles. I suppose it must be, but people seem to stick with the, errr, ordinary way of doing things... ;)

Marie, thanks for the hint about the lovely-sounding dog. Problem is, we live in Germany. With a much smaller gene pool of suitable dogs..
