I'm not sure if this is the best place to put this but I thought it was an excellent piece of advice from a lady called Vicky Payne who is a vet and has spaniels. The question was around a puppy who was giving an older dog a hard time but I think it's also applicable to over-excited dogs in general.

The bold highlighting bit was the advice that was new to me, I apologise if anyone else has made this suggestion and I've missed it :D

And if anyone thinks this post belongs elsewhere let me know and I'll move or repeat it.

After confirming she was happy for me to quote her Vicky also added this:

Reading some of these posts I think I have a smasher! She is totally house trained (except for an excited wee every now and again) although only 9 weeks, eats brilliantly and automatically submitted to my 2 cats (thank god, was very worried about that!). She does like to eat my son's undies though ;D but then again there is still time for the naughty streak to set in

We lost our 16 year old x collie/lab fantastic dog 3 weeks and 1 day ago. I think he was part human, he was the most intelligent loving dog ever. We took the plunge and got a new labrador puppy a week ago. He is 8 weeks old and as you can imagine we are trying to housetrain and crate train him At the moment. I have been off work all this week with him but go back tomorrow so he'll be on his own from 9 - 2.30 and I'm dreading going :(. He is very good in the crate overnight so I'm hoping he'll be just as good during the day!!!! I had forgotten all the things puppies get up to and the shear hard work looking after them but he is adorable and I'm sure I will grow to love him as much as I did my old boy x

So sorry that you lost your beautiful old boy. I know how that feels and my thoughts are with you.

I also know what it's like to take the plunge with a boisterous youngster weeks after :) What's his name?

I hope it goes well tomorrow. Try not to worry while you are at work. Wear him out beforehand, give him a toilet break immediately before you leave and leave him in the crate with plenty of chew toys and some chewable treats (and non-spillable water). Let us know how you go :)

Thank you, I have been heartbroken over losing my old boy but the puppy has helped, as I've not had so much time to dwell. In fact I've not had a minute since we got him last Sunday!!!! His name is Murphy and he's nearly 9 weeks old. He was weighed at vet when we got him and weighed 5.2 kg so I guess he's going to be fairly big :) as I said I will be starting back at work tom so out from 9 to 2.30 tomorrow and I'm just wondering if I should nip home at 12 to let him out for the toilet, and thus disturbing him, or just leave him sleeping (I hope he will be anyway!!) until 2.30? I've loved being off with him this week but unfortunately needs must :(

Any advice of any kind on training a new wee boy would be most welcome. I forget I was 16 years younger when I got my old boy, so maybe Murphy is just so exhausting because I'm getting so old ;)

Hi again Karen , I think it might be a good idea to pop home, even if its a short visit , young pups havent got good bladder control so he may well be very pleased to see you in more ways than one :)

He will soon settle into a routine so dont worry about disturbing him :) There are some excellent articles on here which will help you with Murphy and if you need help over something specific, just shout :)
I can understand how tiring it is and a shock to the system too when you have gone such a long time without a puppy , but try to relax and enjoy him , puppyhood goes so fast :)

Hi Karen, welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new puppy :)

I second Kate's advice above. In fact, very few of my puppies have been able to last more than two-three hours without a wee at nine weeks old, so it is well worth popping home at twelve for the next week or two.

Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve???

    Hi and welcome :)

I work and pop home every day. I work 29 hours a week but flexible times. I never leave Harley for more than 4 hours without going home for at least an hour. She is 7 months now and will spend a max of 6 hours a day in her crate, but has at least an hour out with me home in between. When I went back to work after getting Harley, I popped home roughly every 2 hours.

Hope this helps and good luck. Pups are resilient and will get used to you being out for part of the day. Might be worth putting a kong or something similar in his crate when you leave. Harley loves these, gets all the food out then sleeps til I come home :) (my neighbour looks in the back window occasionally to check on her and told me she is always asleep :) )

Hi and welcome, I can only echo what others have said. I work full time, but my OH works from home. However, when he is away on business trips (sometimes for weeks at a time), then the dog is alone at home. When she was a puppy, she was in her crate, but I had two different lots of people coming round to let her out into the garden and/or take her for a walk. For a tiny puppy, 2/3 hours is the most I would leave him alone in the crate. As he gets older and is more used to it, he will just settle down with his kong and then sleep until you come home. Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve???

Hi everyone, I'm new here and cannot tell you how much better I have felt since reading your posts about Lab puppies. Our lovely Lucy is just over 5 months now and has definitely calmed a little bit - we have had various behaviours including : chasing the cats , stalking the hens, climbing in the pond, digging up all the flowers I had just spent all afternoon planting, scratching the carpets, chewing the table and chair legs, finding dead things to play with (toads, mice, frogs etc) eating cow/horse poo, jumping up, etc etc
But on the plus side she has wormed her way into our hearts with her energy, enthusiasm, joy for life, sweet morning cuddles, making us go for wonderful walks, making us laugh at her antics.
We wouldn't be without her now. We know there is more to come but we can see the fantastic dog she will be once she is grown up - so we'll have to be strong and survive it all!!!
Thanks for making us feel as though we aren't the only ones going through it. x :)
