As most of you know, I am the first time dog owner and I have no clue raising a pup. So far, I have been lucky and Rocky adusted beautifully to our family. Now, I am away from him travelling on work which might get extended . My husband just called to say , he is seeing pink thing like lipstick in Rockys private part sometimes. Rocky is almost 6 months old , we have never seen it before . Does this mean he is growing up? hubby did some research online and says Dogs ejaculate !! Is that true ? i selected a boy so I do not have to deal with "in season" cleaning in bitches. Thinking about semen in our apartment carpets gives me nightmares. I am so lost and scared .. I apologise again If I sound totally ignorant or the topic is inappropriate here. internet search took me to places which made me nauseaous . Thank you all .
Hee Hee! It's absolutely normal. It's his penis. Charlie has his lipstick out 3 or 4 times a week. Just hanging out, for a bit of fresh air.... You will find boy dogs have white discharge, yes. Some people report this reduces after neutering - I wouldn't know, as my boy is entire. For him, it reduced as he grew up a bit and got over the ranging hormones of the teenage months.... Just buy a carpet cleaner and relax.....
No need to be embarrassed I'm afraid boys do leak a bit and their lipsticks pop out for a bit of air. Neither is anything to worry about, all perfectly normal. It's the reason my dogs don't go upstairs on beds and they only go on throws on the sofa. They do clean themselves up to some extent. I only have intact dogs, I'm guessing neutering affects this dramatically perhaps someone else can help out with that
thanks Julie , Does this mean I have to keep watching him like house training days and clean if he has a discharge ? I am worried about my 3 year old daughter who will have to witness it !! How often does this happen ? I like being prepared for things hence I read articles before bringing him home, no post spoke about this part
I did speak to my vet about Neutering and she said , she would like to wait as long as possible to do it. Considering he is on lead most of the time , has good recall and there are very few entire females in our area, risk is minimum . I agree with her too . I would like to keep him entire if it helps his health. His daycare has only boy dogs so thats not an issue.
Well.....er.....your daughter will have to have a 'birds and the bees' talk at some point anyway, can't you use it as a positive opportunity? I mean, it's just a puppy's boy bits, that's all. All boys have 'em! You don't have to do anything about it at all. Just normal diligent household cleaning will be fine. To be honest, it's probably not the most serious thing you have to worry about, dogs bring much more bacteria into your house than a bit of boy discharge, just by living and being dogs! If you want to keep a boy dog off the sofa and beds for this reason, that's fine of course. I just have throws all over the place, towels over his beds (which are easier to wash than taking the covers off the beds all the time) and towels over his mats. Every couple of days I gather the throws and the towels and chuck them in the washing machine. It's not really because of his lipstick discharge though - he is 2.5 years now and although he'll stick his lipstick out time to time I don't ever really see any discharge anymore - it's more just general hygiene having a dog around.
Oh...I'm wondering if you think this is going to be a lot more dramatic than it is? All you'll see is a lipstick time to time, and a few blobs of white discharge on his fur....it's not anymore...er...well...you know, than that.
Julie : I know I must be sounding crazy . I am fine with dirt and everything he brings with him home He is not allowed on bed , sofa from the begining. I think when you live in an apartment , we need to be more careful about hygiene than house where you can restrict access to certain areas . His stuff gets washed very frequently as well. I do not know why I am so uncomfortable with body fluid huh, life with dog !! I am dreading the day he starts humping . I hate it too but I am all ready with training ideas to tackle it.
Just to add that even neutered dogs, like my Sam, occasionally get their lippies out ,especially when madly excited , just minus the " fluids "
on the neutering front - Coco was castrated in July, his "lipstick" is out several times a day! Usually when he's in a high state of arousal (and I don't mean sexual arousal, obviously). We don't get discharge though. And no humping.
You all are making me feel bit better.. Julie: Did you say blobs of fluid ? I was thinking more like urination or squirt like human counter part ( sorry TMI ) , just preparing myself. I think I am fine with lipstick part, I can always ignore it and ask my daughter to do the same . At 3 , she is too small for explanations

I am so glad I had this discussion and I am not worried anymore. thank you everyone for helping with birds and bee conversation I felt like I was a teenager all over again and it shows how important it is to get the information from right source.
We have 3 boy dogs, and I don't really notice much in that department. We also have throws, everywhere and not a problem to chuck things in the washing machine once a week. They are not allowed upstairs though. Mother in law does get irritated with Benson, as he gets HUGELY excited when she's around! lies on his tummy and err... lets everything hang out..Casper is far more genteel., but even he has his moments...you can just about see his little sausage if you zoom in. too excited by Marcus Hart, on Flickr

Just to add Dexter distributed little drops on his bed,they totally stopped after he was neutered....he still pops out his 'morello cherry' ( that was a Body Shop red lipstick name when I started to fly with Emirates that we had to wear with our uniform) occasionally....I don't usually notice it too much as I'm so busy looking at the Goofy face he gets on himself when he does it!
