On our walk this evening Harley pulled up whilst running and yelped. I checked the paw she was holding up and couldn't feel or see anything. She then carried on as normal. After being rinsed off after our walk she wouldn't let me touch the bottom of her left leg or paw. Had a thorough look this evening and have found a large lump right under her left dew claw. She kept licking it and it looks very red and sore. I have got her to stop licking but am now a bit worried. I'm going to call the vets first thing. Should I clean it with hibiscrub or just leave it until tomorrow when we see the vet?

Keeping it dry is the important thing, so if you have stopped her licking it that's great. If you did want to clean it with an antibacterial that won't hurt, but if it's swollen up and is infected then the infection will be inside and a solution applied to the outside won't do very much. I'm sure it is something the vet can help with. It is always stressful when something is wrong with our doggies but try not to worry. Let us know how things go at the vet's tomorrow :)

Poor Harley, could it be a thorn embedded causing swelling? Hope all goes well at the vet tomorrow :( x

Ah hope you haven't all had an unsettled night and she seems better this morning...it seems the wrong time of year to suggest a sting?

I had to bandage it overnight as she kept licking constantly, so had a restless night. I don't think it could be a sting. It's really difficult to get a good look because of where it is. Going to call the vets as soon as they open and get them to look at it.

Charlie ripped his dew claw a couple of months back. It clearly bothered him and he kept nibbling at it. It all healed up without a problem though - I hope Harley's is similar. I did get a vet to check it, and was glad I did.

    I hope it's nothing serious.

Yes - sounds to me like she may have a foreign body in there.

Hope it soon gets sorted xx

Vet says she has an infection in the nail bed in her dew claw. It's been bandaged as she keeps licking it and has anti inflammatories and antibiotics for a week. Hopefully it will heal quickly. She is really milking it and keeps sitting next to me and lifting her bandaged paw trying to show me

Bless her, poor girl. Hope the infection is soon sorted by the antibiotics.

Thanks all. I had to change the bandages a few mins ago as she got it very wet! So glad I went on the first aid for dogs course recently . She really is milking it, especially with OH and daughter!
Harley agrees it has been too long. Will have to put a date in soon Kate - Beanwood

Harleys infection has not improved She's been on antibiotics for 6 days and it hasn't helped. We took the bandage off after 3 days and she hasn't licked it when we've been home. When we've been out she has had a long sock on that goes over her neck to keep it from falling down.
We have got a vets appointment for 8.30am tomorrow, so will see what they say.

I just saw this post and was curious to see exactly what was wrong with Harley's paw. I hated to mention the ā€œCā€ word, but I was worried that it could have ended up being that or some other type of tumor. My dog, Lady, has a BIG knot under her front left dew claw and it is not sore, so it is really starting to worry me. I just it tonight, so I haven't been able to take her to the vet.
