When Obi had his foot injury last year getting him to pee was a marathon effort...

Enjoy the couch cuddles, Poppy, and get better soon. Sounds like a bad fall - she is probably a bit sore all over, poor girl.

You are right Rachael, I think she probably is a bit bruised all over.

OH is beating himself up about it no end. We are normally very carefully about metal grids, having seen another dog lose a claw in one a couple of years ago. But somehow yesterday he wasn't as vigilant as normal - and then compounded the problem by calling her down off the steps instead of letting her get down at her own pace. Apparently she was a bit winded and upset after the fall, so he ended up carrying her part of the way back to the car... His clothes were a right mess, covered in mud and blood! I keep telling him not to blame himself; these things happen so quickly!

She got most of the bandage off her foot last night, so as we were going to the vet anyway I took the rest off. It does look sore, poor girl, and is obviously very painful. She was shaking and closing her eyes, and wouldn't even take treats from me.. The foot is now bandaged back up and the vet says it will need to stay bandaged for 10 days to 2 weeks, being changed every couple of days. Vet also says the not peeing thing is a typical reaction to the pain, and that we should just continue to make sure she drinks lots. She hardly drinks anything normally, so we have been adding water to her food and I gave her a drink of water with a bit of milk mixed in, which she enjoyed. Poor girl, she is not having a nice time.

Oh poor Poppy, it sounds as if she's a really unhappy little girl at the moment and that the paw is really painful. If Juno isn't drinking I offer her bottled water instead of the usual tap. Evian seems to be very acceptable

Just thinking.....Any chance she's busted a toe bone or something along with it....?

Sounds like it hurts a lot more than any pulled out claw I have seen...

Painkillers - yes, she has metacam, and I just asked if we can up the dose. If she seems bad this evening we can give her tomorrow morning's dose early.

I do think there is a chance she might have broken a toe bone - the way OH described it, it certainly sounds possible. The vet didn't think so though, but if things aren't any better tomorrow I'll take her back in for another check.

Just to add: Poppy is not very brave about pain. If this had happened to Bones, you wouldn't even have known about it.

Think I prefer a dog that isn't brave with pain. Juno is so stoic I don't know when she's hurting , makes it hard with her dysplasia. Hopefully the metacam will start giving some relief, it can take a few doses to get full effect. Juno send licks to Poppy

So sorry to hear this, I hope things improve for Poppy soon. It does sound worse than just a toenail though....Charlie had his toes x-rayed, a while ago not recently, they put cotton wool between his toes, like he was going to have his nails painted!
