Its because when we don't like something we turn our heads away and narrow our eyes its a monkey thing. Too cats this looking away and narrow the eyes means I'm no threat come over i'd like to meet you. Loads of people who don't like cats have this problem instead of looking away stare its a threat to most animals and they we leave you alone.

Cats like you because you are nice they see a calm person who doesn't invade their space, they like that.

If you ever met my friends cat Daisy you would think you'd met a Lab she's the softest cuddlest creature I've ever come across. If you met my long gone cat Colin you would never go near another cat again. I was his last chance he was so aggresive he was living with me on trial from a local cat charity I support, he never left. I loved him and he in his own crazy way did me. We had to have a curfew on him and he was only allowed outside when I was home as he would attack other cats dogs and people he did't like. He was very intelligent and I had to clicker train him as it helped in his management. He scared me perminately he bit my finger to the bone. He was a devil to treat at the vets and every time i went on holiday the cattery I took him too would refuse to have him again.
He was a lot more dangerous than any of the horses or dogs I've lived with but it worked and he lived a happy life with me. I really miss him. he was awesome, best cat ever.
He loved the dogs and all the neighbour hood knew when we had all got back from a pm dog walk because Colin would roar like a lion when he knew we were coming.
Prob not helped with your cat thing but I just love cats too and really miss not having one. When I become less mobile and can no longer have dogs I will get another cat hopefully

Our neighbours cat 'Dude' isn't too bad as he's very friendly, comes up and rolls onto his back for a belly rub. He's not too clever though as he has a habit of walking out infront of your car and just lying down in the road! Luckily we live in a small court and everyone knows him so we have to stop the car, get out, pick him up and put him down off the road!

One of my sons has a black Maine Coon who travels happily in the car. They used a harness and lead from when he was tiny(!) and my daughter-in-law took him on short journeys collecting the children from school, then eventually taking him to our holiday hut in Scotland, about an hour's drive from their home. He stays indoors there, though, but enjoys ruling the dogs! He's also coped with long journeys down to the south of England, but again staying indoors when he's here.

Our cat when I was a teenager, William, was a complete sweetie - gentle, loving, talkative, and affectionate. We used to carry him draped around our necks like a fur stole, and he put up with all kinds of games at our hands. The dogs were very careful of him though, and my labrador was often found looking very sad lying on the floor in the morning, with the cat happily ensconced in his bed... He used to catch mice and eat them in front of the salivating dogs, while yowling at them warningly... He was a terrible fighter of other cats, and his ears were full of bite holes! I've never known another cat of such character.

My sister had a cat that became a family cat when she split up from her boyfriend. She (the cat) was a tortoiseshell thug called Marmalade. She was a rescue, had been hit by a car in a previous life and was an aggressive monster for the first couple of years. She was one of those that sat on your lap, purring as you stroked her but would then flip out and go for you. In time, she settled down and became less vicious. She kept her claws retracted and would punch you instead of scratching :D

When I lived in Australia as a 5 - 7 year old, a grey 3 legged cat adopted us and when her kittens were born I couldn't work out why they had 4 legs :D

You can do this on purpose to reassure a cat. Look at it and close your eyes. Take it a step further, close your eyes, yawn and look away. It can also help to keep your hands hidden. I've socialled up a couple of ferals doing this, among other things.

P.S. How do I quote a post? And how can I put the brown quote box around a part of some one else's post?

@Snowshoe to quote a post just click on Reply, and to select part of a post, select the text you want - I click at the start of the text and then just I use Control and arrow over the text. You will get a grey box come up with "Reply", click on the box and hey presto, there's the text in your post
