This is in the Chat section instead of Health because I'm not really worried. But if you have encountered the same thing I'm curious how long it went on. Sunday is toenail clipping day. I always do them before a walk, partly to use the walk as an incentive to put up with it and partly because the walk wears off the sharp edges, though not so much on snow. Done, in the car, off we went to some trails we haven't been to for about a month. And I noticed blood in spots on the snow. There was no blood on my light coloured kitchen floor at home. And the spots didn't seem to be in footprints. I honestly wondered if someone who had walked or skiied or snowshoed ahead of us had had a bit of bloody nose. Back home, no blood. None the next day till we went for a walk, and there were the spots again. Some here, then a big gap, then some more. A lady we met with her dog said she thought it was Oban's foot. Back home, no blood on my floor, didn't notice it the next day. Today, little bloody spots in the snow again. This is the fourth day since I clipped them. Today I watched carefully and picked up the right front foot, yup the inside nail is bleeding. No blood on the blanket in my car and still none on the floor in the house. Since it seems the minute he stops running around on that foot it stops bleeding I guess the quick will recede and it will heal up. But, weird, eh? Happen to your pup?
I don't know Snowshoe, I have never had to clip any of my dogs' nails - but it does sound as though maybe the nail was clipped too short?
Well yes. But usually it will bleed right away and eventually stop. This one is doing the opposite. For four days. Strange. It looks fine now, wonder if it will bleed tomorrow?
Not sure but I remember someone else saying that their dog's nail didn't start bleeding until well after they'd got home from having the nails clipped so that might have been a similar issue. We didn't have that issue. Our house looked like a murder scene when I cut Ella's nails too short.
Yep happened to me turned out Doug had SLO. Symmetrical Lupoid Onchodystrophy. He went on to develop another type of lupus too from this lupoid condition. He is an autoimmune dog with all the challenges this means. Just keep an eye on it has he got any deformed nails or are his nails falling of or breaking for no reason? Has his gait altered or is he quieter than normal? Is he rocking back on his heels? Is he licking his feet or nails excesively? If you have a good sense of smell you might be able to get a wiff of the distictive rot smell that comes form the quick of the nail as its infected. It probably not this just keep an eye on it. Sorry if this worries you no one could work out what was happening with Doug for ages and he got really ill. I'd hate for anyone to be in that situation. Its something thats not too well know, but I suspect its out there a lot more than its diagnosed as it can range to really mild and then very severe. I am understandably very nervous about unexplained nail problems and want to inform you rather than scare you. Hope the bleeding stops and he fine x
@sdegg that sounds pretty scary. Is Doug ok now? Nothing deformed or falling off here. We had a skiff of fresh snow and no blood in it this morning so I guess it's finally healed right up.
I wonder how many people miss spots of blood because they don't have the snow? It certainly does show it up well when they split their pads etc!
I wonder if its something like you clipped it a bit short but not enough for it to bleed fully at home and it scabbed over quickly... Then you go out in the snow which acts like water and soaks the scab off so it starts to bleed. Then scabs over again once you've got them back in the car/inside so no blood in the house?
Yes, and I thought that too when he had a UTI that I noticed because the big splash of pee on the snow was RED instead of yellow. For feet though, my kitchen floor is a light colour. I usually cut toenails out on the deck but we come right back inside onto that light floor.
That must be it, I think too. And then once we got going on the walks, all four days of them, the blood got pumping as he ran and played and forced the scab even more.
glad its stopped hopefully just the change pressure on the foot. sadly Doug is not ok , he's happy dog with a good life but this thing has blighted his life
