Yes I suppose your right. Its just you feel so sorry for your dog you dont think straight. You feel you want to blame someone. :(
But on a happier note milo had his stitches out yesterday and the vet was very pleased.:D I m so relieved and happy. I know we have a long way to go but at the moment its all good.

Oh believe me I raged and cried over Juno's ED and she's the only 1 in a litter of 10 that has any problem. I eventually put it into perspective that it is a matter of luck within the gene pool and remembered what my orthopaedic surgeon told me that it can be 5 generations without any instance of ED or HD and then it appears. Juno's dad has sired numerous litters with no problems and it was her mum's first litter. I suppose to some extent it lowered my faith in the x-ray results for elbows but on the other hand at least the x-rays say what dogs shouldn't be bred from.

Have you let Milo's breeder know, mine was absolutely devastated that one of her pups should have ED.

What are the next steps for Milo's recovery? I got through by working towards each milestone we reached and passed without incident, taking one day at a time.

I have told the breeder.I didnt know that it can bypass generations. Im calmer now especially as I understand more.
Milo is doing really well. The vet was pleased when Milo had his stitches out. And he said I had done a good job :) Fingers crossed he carries on this way. Im taking him for hydrotherapy tomorrow.

I don't think it's really true that ED 'bypasses' generations - it's just that the way ED is transmitted through the generations is not understood at all. Plus, some dogs do not show signs of ED themselves, either on x-ray or in terms of limping (at least in early life) but do have dysplastic elbows or the capacity to transmit (by a mechanism we don't understand) elbow dysplasia.

The Orthopedic foundation for animals looked at its database and of pairing of parents rated with 'normal' elbows 12.5% of puppies could be expected to have elbow dysplasia resulting from these parents - that's an average result, if I understand it (and the breeds involved were Labs, Goldens, and Rottis and GSDs). This was a very large dataset of over thirteen thousand dogs. That does not mean that in every litter of puppies from parents with 'normal' elbows will produce some puppies that will later be diagnosed with ED, but really for breeding we need to look for lines that are completely free of ED. This is incredibly hard to do on current records, but will improve in the future.

In terms of the value of x-rays, these do very, very much improve the odds - in the study above, the rate of ED more than doubled when one parent was affected, and more than tripled when both parents were affected.

Mabel also has elbow Dysplasia she had surgery last July. Definitely discuss feeding with your vet. I had Mabel on Arden Grange large puppy at the time. He suggested once she reached her first birthday to change to Arden Grange Light. She has done well on this but I did slightly over feed and he suggested I reduced her intake by 20% which has really helped. I'd also got her on quite a concoction of Omega 3, turmeric golden paste and glucosamine. After doing further research and me beginning to wonder about the value of it as her right leg was getting progressively worse. I've stopped this and she has Yumove instead. Her limbs do seem do be settling down now, only time will tell. I also tend to choose treats that are good for her joints.
It does seem to be such a mind field though and just when I think I've got it just right I read something that makes me think again or she just suddenly limps.
    Good luck with Milo. :)

@Pilatelover Not sure if you buy your Yumove online direct but I had an email from Lintbells a few days ago to say that their prices will rise from 1 March on all their products. They don't say how much the prices will rise but it's the first rise in 2 years

Thanks @MaccieD I've bought mine from Fetch, the price was so good I bought 600 tablets. Lintnells sent me a free sample with a voucher off my first order which I've kept in reserve.
