My wee 10 week old puppy has just been to the vet with terrible vomiting and diarrhea.
He has had small stomach upsets of up to two days before, but nothing like this.
He was alone for three hours in his regular play area, having had his regular puppy food and half a banana in his kong, and my partner returned to find him with explosive diarrhea and vomiting. He was limp and very very unlike himself. We took him straight to the vet. She has done x rays revealing nothing, has given him vitamin shots, anti nausea, and a pain killer and sent him home with us for the night (the other option was leaving him in overnight unattended with an IV in for 12 hours with no one there...that was what she recommended. I dont think so). I have managed to syringe 5 10ml syringes of dog powerade into him, but he is still quite sedated.
I am just really worried that this isnt your normal puppy vomiting bug.
I am also so scared he has parvovirus. Even though he has had two of his vaccinations and hasnt been off the property, apparently it can be lurking around anywhere.
Can anyone please tell me if they have experienced this?

Hello and welcome . I would get him back to the Vets as soon as possible , pups can go down very quickly, they also recover quickly too, but it sounds like he has a really nasty bug, he may need blood tests to see if anything is lurking there and possibly antibiotics if there is . I do hope your little one will soon recover, please let us know .

So sorry to hear that your puppy is so poorly but you did the right thing taking him to the vet. It is very unlikely that it is parvovirus as he has quite a high level of protection having received 2 vaccinations. Yes parvovirus does linger in the soil but the risk is highest where untreated animals use areas so unless you have foxes ir something such like visiting and using your garden the risk is small. Follow your vets advice but I think at the moment I would only give boiled water to keep him well hydrated with nothing else added. If you are concerned about parvo please phone your vet who will have the local knowledge on the risk levels.
    Hope he's better soon.

The vet said the risk of parvo was small but it was still there. She has given me the powerade for dogs solution - it is just electrolytes and sugars etc to try and replace what he has lost. He didnt have a temperature so she didnt see the need for antibiotics. But it was so scary he was so poorly and all limp and kept looking into my eyes in despair. I dont even think I realised quite how much I loved him until now

It's good that the vet regards the parvo risk as small, I guess at the end of the day all our pups face some risk even in our gardens as we don't always know what has been through the garden. We had foxes in the area when Juno was tiny so I did worry about her in the garden.
I'm glad that it was the vet that gave the powerade, I thought perhaps you had added it to help. It does sound like a nasty bug but puppies pick so much up in their mouths and become poorly so quickly. Keep a close eye on him and if you're concerned about how he is please phone the vet. As Kate says they become poorly quickly but also pick up quickly.

As advised, take him to the vet this morning, he may well need to be on a drip today but if not it will put your mind at rest to have the vet's advice. It is so worrying when a beloved animal is ill, I will be thinking of you.

its night time here in NZ, so he has been at the vet up until a few hours ago when we opted to bring him home rather than leave him there alone over night. I will take him in first thing in the morning if he has not picked up, but I trusted myself more than leaving him on an IV with no one around.

    You have one lucky pup.

Lucky because he has you as an owner. You did all the right things, didn't delay in getting him to the vet.

Lucky because he obviously has a good vet who doesn't throw anti biotics at everything.

As has been said, they get ill frighteningly quickly but also bounce right back equally quickly.

Routing for you here in England.

Don't forget to let us know how you get on.

Please let us know how your little pup is come the morning. I'm sure you won't get much sleep tonight and will be constantly checking on him. I hope a night's sleep will see him perked up a bit.

He's definitely lucky to have you looking after him.

Hi everyone, well we had an interesting night and Huxley still has bad diarrhea but he isnt vomiting any longer and is drinking by himself instead of me having to syringe it in, so I think things are definitely improving. I managed to get around 800 mls of the rehydration fluids into him over night so I think that is pretty good. He seems better with himself too, even attempting a tail wag and a bit of nibbling on my hand just now so I am feeling ok about him. Have popped him back into bed and am going to try and sleep for an hour myself! Thanks for all your lovely kind messages

Sounds as if he is on the mend. Have a good rest, you're going to need to be well rested once he really perks up :)
