@Newbie Lab Owner oh i thought you actually knew a bit of italian and was a bit pessimist about it, while for @JulieT it's a bit weird how google or whatever you used to translate the sentence made that but well that's normal with all the current online translators
Ah that's why i found it weird that it was too polite using the formal tone. Usually translators can't get that right. It was a good attempt indeed!
Try living with someone (actually, that would be most people from Europe...) that say "I don't speak any Italian/Spanish/German....." but will still look at you in amazement when you can't even book a table or order a coffee/taxi in 4 languages. "Don't speak another language" means something different to the rest of Europe than it does in the UK...
I mean people in the UK are rubbish at languages, and people in the rest of Europe are usually much, much better and can string basic sentences together in a few languages. It's not really our fault, whenever we travel to another country, even the taxi drivers speak some English - and this makes us very lazy. Well, not lazy, just really rubbish at other languages.
We were in a lovely friendly little restaurant in Rome a few years back. It was actually more like someone's living room, after the 12 of us were seated the owner was going through the menu and most meals had the ingredients translated into English. He got to one item and was saying they didn't know what the translation was. He then went a bought out a courgette and was so thrilled to have us write it down for him. A lot of local people came in and everyone was squeezed in. Absolutely top class friendly service and fantastic food, we were all trying to learn how to ask for things in Italian. Lovely end to a very cold snowy day
