Should I get a harness?

Delta will be getting her final immunization this Friday. I will then wait a week before I take her out in public. This will put her at being 11 weeks old. I have been working with her off lead quite a bit, but will need a leash at times for some of these public outings. I have put a collar on her and let her drag a leash around the backyard. I then read on here about harnesses. The harness with a clip for the lead on the front sounds great, I never knew that such a thing existed.

Is there a particular harness, that works well for a small, growing pup? I just don't want to spend too much money on a harness that she will outgrow quickly.

Hello there, I always think harnesses for small puppies are a great idea - their necks seem so very small and delicate, I hate seeing a small puppy on a collar (I'm not keen on seeing an older dog on a collar if its pulling either).

I used quite cheap mesh back fastening harnesses when Charlie was young, and bought more expensive ones later. The ones I used were these:

    Me too!

I took Tatze to her first puppy class at 13 weeks and the first thing the trainer said was "get her a harness". She was a great trainer and Tatze learned not to pull very quickly :)

I've only ever used a collar and lead with Juno and worked on a loose lead walk from day 1

We tried a puppia harness and it was great but the hassle of putting it on (he wasn't at all keen) was too much and we went with practicing a loose lead walk with a collar and generally that works fine.

I bought harnesses for my two after Shadow slipped his collar in the first week of having him and nearly ran in front of a lorry. It's a no-brainer for me now. I went with the Puppia harnesses, too, and didn't have any issues with putting them on. I still taught loose-lead walking - I don't think you need a front-fastening harness for a puppy because they don't have any weight to put behind them, so you'd be relying on the mechanical device rather than training. Front fasteners can apparently affect the dog's gait, too, which isn't good if you're relying on it at any age, and certainly not for a young puppy.
