Benson..had 2 breakfasts... One around 90g The other a conservative 1kg... I popped out to walk Bramble, leaving the understairs cupboard a little ajar, that is where the puppy food is kept. Came back in, to find the bag in the front room and Benson looking distinctly rotund flopped in the kitchen. He has thrown up a huge amount already. I have taken him for a gentle walk, as he was obviously still completely stuffed. I think he is OK. He starts a gundog training course tomorrow, and not supposed to have any breakfast beforehand..well that's OK cos Benson had the equivalent of around 10 this morning...sigh.. On a serious note, should there be anything I should be doing, or looking out for? Apart from starving him that is...
When Shadow did this as a pup, we took him to the emergency vet who tapped his tummy, heard it was full and told us it was far less serious for a dog to be bloated with food than with air. So that's good. She still said it could be serious, though, so she gave him some medicine (not sure what now ) and to keep an eye on him for any lethargy etc, and just to starve him. If he looks like he's in any discomfort, or lethargic, get him straight to the vet. Other than that, take LOTS of poo bags out with you. Honestly. LOTS.
Oh Benson . Can't really advise much about anything to look out for although it sounds as if he brought up a fair amount of excess. I wouldn't encourage him to be too lively either. You may also need some extra large poop bags . I'm sure he will be fine - he's just done what many dogs do (given the slightest opportunity) and though uncomfortable today will no doubt be back to his normal self tomorrow. If in any doubt of course, a quick ring to the vet will relieve any concerns
Well Benson became a bit uncomfortable, he started to REALLY bloat out,plus he tried to vomit and started to pant, so we took him to the vets. After examining him they took him straight into Xray, as they decided the safest option was to sedate and xray his abdomen. On the Xray they found that he was completely full inside, I mean really full. He is OK, no sign of bloat, we just need to keep an eye on him. I was really, really impressed with the staff, they were so quick, and had a team on standby if they needed to operate. They let us stay with him while he went to sleep, so we could comfort him which was lovely. He is home now and very sleepy, we just need to keep an eye on him in case he bloats further, but he should be fine. Interestingly, my OH @Bensons-dad counted 6 chocolate labradors there tonight! Friday is obviously chocolate night! I now need a really, really big glass of wine...
Oh no! At least the vet trip will have put your mind at rest. These dogs of ours do put us through it don't they.
Better to be safe and have him checked over. Try and relax with a large glass of wine - you deserve it
Yes, apparently it was probably a bit more than 1kg....he is feeling very sorry for himself.... large glass of wine consumed...now on glass number 2... If he is up for training tomorrow will take a couple of bin liners... I think actually Benson was reading my emails, as the advice for tomorrow was not to give the dogs any breakfast..think he panicked at that bit.
*snort* If it was anything like Shadow, Benson would have been huge! I couldn't believe how big my skinny little runt got - and not just his tummy, his rib cage was massively expanded, too. Benson must have looked enormous!

I'm going to stop Pongo from reading this thread. His bag of food is kept in the shed and he'll watch over it and get very excited when I go near it, but he never takes anything from it (despite the fact that it is wide open and on the floor below his head level), even when no-one is watching him. Please don't let Benson tell him that it is possible to steal food direct from the bag.
I hope Benson is feeling better today and you managed to get a good nights sleep X I think there must be something in the air this week......I came home from work on Monday, dog walker had taken Harley out then gave her a dentastick when they got back (from a new packet of 7). He put it on the worktop where we always leave them (she's never touched them before!). I got home, she ran out to me with an empty back in her mouth
In my house treats left out are 100% safe with Juno it's my cat Oscar who steals them, rips the pack open and eats them all - well I presume he eats them all although his co-conspirator Belle ,my other cat, may assist with the eating
