Good evening all ever since we picked up Albie nearly two weeks ago we noticed his right eye was very watery and it looked almost like his right eye was crying all the time. No squinting or yellow discharge etc. When he went for his first health check the vet said it isn't anything to worry about and should clear up. A week and a half later its no worse but certainly no better and to make things worse phoned the vet today and they said to book him in but they will charge a consolation fee! Now whilst im not been tight I dont like getting screwed over for money and having already paid for a health check and asking about his eye dont really think its fair to be asked t0 pay for just a look at it. Any thoughts on the eye - vets
Hello there, sorry to hear about your puppy's eye, I hope you manage to get it sorted. It's impossible to say what it might be I'm afraid. I think it sounds absolutely normal to have to pay a consultation fee to see a vet. I wouldn't expect my vet to see my dog a second time for free just because the first time the advice was that a condition should go away on its own. Unfortunately, this hasn't happened, so you need to see a vet again - I just think it's normal you have to pay for that.
Hi , I`m afraid I am a little ( well a lot really ) paranoid about eyes since one of my dogs developed a condition which required emergency surgery , so for me , any doubts or worries and I would be straight at my Vets . I`m not for one moment suggesting that it is anything to worry about, but I would certainly be on the Vets doorstep, just to play safe .
It could be any number of things from a blocked tear duct which is very common to an inward growing eyelash causing some irritation. I would pop him along to the vet, I too am paranoid when it comes to eyes they're much too precious.
I agree - if you are worried then needs to be the vet. If its something getting worse or not settling after the allotted time, ditto. We are used to not paying for our human medical care (at least, not directly) so it does seem to stick in the gall a bit.
ok thanks everyone its strange its hardly watered the last few hours or so. How much should a eye water?
Poor Albie, I agree popping him back to the vet is the safest option. A few years ago my rescue dog Charlie developed at abscess literally overnight, not sure if it was from a scratch or something else but it was awful and must have been so painful. I would never take chances with eyes. I really hope he will be OK. x
Difficult to say without seeing , all pups and dogs should have moist looking eyes, its the tears that keep the surface of the eyes clean and therefore protect . I would say excess is if you need to keep continually cleaning tears away , Vet is the best person to assess properly
I'd say an eye shouldn't look watery at all. I mean they shouldn't look dry, but there shouldn't be any kind of watery discharge from the eye at all.
It is usual that if you go back to the vet with the same complaint, they will charge less - a re-examination fee! Best to have it seen now, rather than wait and it gets worse.
I've heard time and time again, yellow or greenish discharge is infection, clear or pale white isn't. NOt so. Oban's was clear and it was conjunctivitis. There shouldn't be ANY discharge. If Albie has had a runny eye for two weeks I'm surprised your Vet didn't culture it. To confuse things, after Oban's eye cleared up with a week's worth of ointment, his eye got runny again. The Vet cultured again and this time no infection. She said it was a common puppy thing in spring (he was 6 months old) as new grasses and pollens encounter brand new puppy eyes, the eyes might react a bit. I was to keep my eye on it and take him back if it worsened but she expected it would clear up and go away on it's own. Whad'y'ya know, she was right, it did. But the first time? It was infected the first time. Eyes are scary. They have two of them so the reasoning is that one is a spare, right? Like some other body parts? I want my dog to have both eyes working (since neither of mine is, I'm maybe sensitive about that) and will spare no expense on eyes.
Since posting on here his eye seems much better he must be scared of the vets Will see how it is later on as he's booked in for second set of injections Friday anyway. Regarding the vets don't get me wrong I will pay for whatever the little guy needs it just seems wrong that the vet has already looked at his eye and not really done anything about it and now want to charge again. However Albies health is all that matters
bbbrown, the vet I worked for and the vet I now consult, always charge less for a re-examination fee, it is less 'work' once the initial examination has been done.
My dog has had conjunctivitis once or twice that was a small amount of yellow thick discharge and irritated eyes a couple of times that was just sore red eyes....no discharge at all....I don't think I've ever seem them 'water' If he's had a particularly energetic hoolie on a sand dune I give him a couple of drops of 'tears au naturelle' to give a little extra moisture to flush any sand debris away..... Dexter itrritations were when he was very young and my vet told me it can be very common whilst they are 'growing into ' the skin of their faces...true enough we didn't have problems as he got older, but I would definately get checked out.... ( We pay a consultation fee every time but it is waived if it is a follow up after an operation....no pet health insurance in Dubai either )
