I'm exhausted just reading that Good by Shadow you deserved that egg that's for sure. Still good training opportunities Fiona which you just have got to take when there on offer. We use the "look at that" with Charlie when we are duck, pheasant and anything with feathers training and any other situations that are exciting or potentially reactive it really works well.
I have no idea why parents do this. Kids are forever running up to Charlie in Wimbledon Park. The risk with Charlie of course is he'll get over excited, and decide to deliver 30kg of enthusiastic Chocolate kisses and, well, just squish a child *shudder*... *shudder*... *nightmare*..... Nothing like this has ever happened, of course, but....
Heh, it was the first real test I've had so far on my 100 days off the booze. If there was ever a time I thought a drink would have been lovely to settle the nerves, that was it I am so glad I read Control Unleashed what seems like a hundred years ago - that one exercise has been a godsend!
I think any book is worth a read! I need to revisit it, I think, to see if there's anything else in there that will be of assistance now I'm a bit farther down the line, but at the time I read it, I was having issues with Willow being afraid of all sorts of things, and the LAT technique helped me out tremendously, so I pretty much focussed all my efforts on that one exercise. I'm sure there are other things in there that will be helpful, too, that I glossed over on my first read, to get to what was pertinent for me then.
This isn't true - moral compass development by Donald Trump, the point of Katie Hopkins by Katie Hopkins.... However, Control Unleashed is a very good book. @bbrown convinced me to spend my book pocket money at clickerexpo on control unleashed, the puppy programme. Which apparently isn't really a puppy programme but is more like version II. It's nearly at the top of my 'things to read' pile.
I'm on holiday and have brought Control Unleashed (puppy) and the DVDs with me (much to my husbands amusement )
I haven't started it yet! Only had it 5 months.....maybe I'll just wait for you to read it then you can give me all the best new tips.
I would be interested as well @bbrown I do intend to buy it at some point, but want to know if it is helpful!
I promise I'll write a review I already use two elements with Obi - reorienting at boundaries (garden gate, car, general gates and doors) and LAT the same as Fiona to try and have a slightly more measured approach to things. Both are very much works in progress!
Sounds like an utter nightmare - thanks for 'look at that tip' - what good dogs they were to get through all that! Can I offload this to you please? We were on the beach yesterday and all was going well until a family came towards us, with a teenage boy running straight at us. The mother had two younger boys, an elderly black lab and a small hairy dog with her. George was fine ignoring them, Henry looked at me, obviously considered his choices and then joined the jogging teenager. The mother was OK with that (as I say she had a lab of her own), and in my opinion the trigger had been the boy rushing up thrilled with a pup ,but she did warn me that the elderly lab might snap at Henry if he got too much in her face. He then immediately got too much in her face ( all this time I was attempting to grab him and it was like trying to wrangle a greased pig) , she started to growl which was the cue for George to enter into the fray as Health and Safety Officer in charge of his pup - and the situation got worse instead of better. Finally grabbed H and G stood down from red alert, but had wrenched my shoulder in the process. Came home , decided to take some brufen for shoulder and by now banging headache, so rattled dispensed and swallowed one of George's Synoquin tabs instead. Looked on packet and there in reassuring capital letters it stated 'NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION' - waited until today to post this in case I woke up dead! Ah well today is another day and we have just returned from a much less stressful outing praise be. I am trying to take something positive away from all of this and I can think of I possible and one definite: 1. I think that H. is good at recall under a lot of circumstances , but this was a bridge too far for someone of 7 months. 2. The Synoquin didn't kill me!
Sorry, but this made me laugh! Knowing that you didn't wake up dead, that is! It can be so hard wrangling multiple dogs. Shadow can be reactive to other males, and so he's always the one I have to concentrate on. I'm afraid if I come across potential problem situations when I have both of them, and it's safe to do so, I tend to let Willow off her lead and let her fend for herself, because she's great with other dogs. That leaves me to concentrate on Shadow, although the downside can be that, if Willow does interact with the other dog(s), it can make Shadow more anxious. My two wouldn't have been able to resist someone running when they were younger, so I'm not surprised young Henry couldn't either. These situations are always stressful, but each time we come across something like this, we learn a little more ( like read the packet before swallowing! ) and we're better able to manage the next time
@lynnew Im so sorry I roared with laughter at your post. So glad you didn't wake up dead. I'm in the process of hiring a cottage by the beach for 3 weeks while our building work is completed, any tips on dogs and beaches are always read very closely. Mabel's only been to the beach for a week so it should be interesting
