Out for a walk yesterday evening and I could feel something inside my walking boot, scratching at my ankle. I stopped a couple of times and tried to feel for a bit of twig, thorn, or something similar but had no joy. In the end, it was getting too much for me, so I sat on a rock and removed my boot and sock. There I found the culprit - one of Shadow's hairs on my sock, which had managed to "burrow" its way about a centimetre inside my ankle! No wonder it was uncomfortable!

Oh gosh! You sure it wasn't a whisker? That's some feat for a plain old hair.

It might have been one of his chin whiskers, I suppose. It was only about an inch long and not particularly stiff. It was the root end that had gone in. I just assumed it was one of his guard hairs.

Hair splinters?! I've heard it all now :D

A friend of mine was trimming his palm tree in Spain a few years ago. Stupidly, he was doing it bare foot. He stepped down off the stool he was on and stood right on a spiky palm frond, which went deep into his foot. He pulled it out, but was in a huge amount of pain. Went to the doctor, who cleaned it out and said he had it all, but several days later, he was still in pain. He went back to the doc, who was very dismissive of him, so sent him home. In desperation, and certain there was still something in there, he even had a go at digging at the wound himself, but found nothing.

A couple of weeks later, he was still in pain from it, his foot was very swollen, when he noticed a lump on the top of his foot. He broke the lump and, alongside a lot of goo, a centimetre-long piece of palm leaf came shooting out of his foot. It had worked its way all the way through from the sole to the top. Gross.

    Ouch!

I've had a dog hair work it's way into the bottom of my foot before. Thought it was just a little splinter until this 1" long hair appeared, have to say it made me feel quite sick pulling it out.

I get hairs stuck in my foot quite often.
They cause a particular niggly kind of pain.
Much easier to get out if they are less than half buried.

What? What? What on earth....no, I have never had a dog hair stick itself inside my skin or work its way through my foot! Do your dogs have steel hairs or something? :D

That happens to me and not the OH. Those darn hairs HURT. And with Jet it wasn't the sabre shaped outer guard hairs, not the ones that look like they could do that, oh no, it was her fine, soft undercoat hairs. They hurt coming out too, the hairs have barbs on them, or scales or something that want to only go in one direction. It feels like a shard of glass, doesn't it?

Well, I'm glad it's not just me! I have no idea really how it ended up inside my ankle, because it wasn't a stiff hair. I guess it was inside my sock and the friction of my walking boot was in just the right place to make a tiny hole in my skin which it pushed into. The area around where the hair was under the skin was red and inflamed. It definitely felt like I was being stabbed by something.
