I have a 3 and half year old black lab,early in Feb I was out walking him and he was running around with his ball like a lunatic and all seemed fine. After being at home for couple hours and laying his bed I got him up and he made a 'Yelp/cry'...! I didn't think much of it until he done it again shortly after. For the next 2 days he wasn't himself and didn't want to get out from his bed,going out for a wee was also a problem as he would need to walk up 2 steps to come back into the house and he was very reluctant to do so. After a visit to the vets and some anti inflammations he was on the road to recovery. The last couple days it seems to have crept back in again,it seems to be his back right leg when he makes an explosive movement...EG..Jumping up/pushing off....just walking around seems fine. I don't know if keeping his walks to a minimum for a week my help or get a vet appointment for a check up. He has been when it first happened but they couldn't find anything. Hate seeing him so sad and in pain. Any help would be great. Thanks
Sorry that your dog is not 100% at the moment. It's always stressful. One thing you could do is ask your vet for a referral to an orthopaedic specialist, who will have vast experience of diagnosing and dealing with joint/limb issues. Generally, seeing a specialist is the fast track to an answer.
Hello there, I would return to the vet - without delay, and I would also second the advice to see a specialist. I do hope your dog is ok, and it turns out to be nothing. I can't possibly know what (if anything) is wrong with your dog, but the symptoms you describe are similar to those of a ruptured cruciate ligament (my dog has ruptured both of his cruciate ligaments, unfortunately, although has very successfully recovered after treatment). A regular vet also first missed this in my dog, but thankfully I saw a physio who told me to go back and see a more senior/specialist vet.
I would be taking my dog to the vet and if they couldn't find anything asking for a referral to a specialist.

It's really difficult saying what it is, and of course I will be relating to my own experience -- so please don't think your dog has what Snowie has! Snowie also yelped in pain, and one time screamed. My vet thought it might be either his hip (because while she was pulling his leg she heard a click) or a slipped disc in his neck (based on how I described his behaviour of not wanting to move at all for three hours). After seeing a specialist orthopaedic surgeon and an MRI and x-ray later, we discovered he had a bulging disc between his lumber 7 and sacral vertebrae (L7-S joint). I would definitely be seeing an orthopaedic specialist -- based on our experience, the specialist used his hands to examine Snowie and immediately diagnosed the problem in a matter minutes. The MRI and x-ray confirmed his diagnosis. Best of luck getting to the bottom of it and I hope it's nothing too serious.
