Gosh....Charlie has lost weight recently, he is back down to his absolutely perfect weight of 28.5kgs, after being above 29kgs for a little while (which is still fine for him, the vet says Charlie is still slim at 30kgs, but because he has had joint problems we keep him below just 'slim', which is something below 30kgs). He looks fab!
Yup, they are runty little things I do want to get Shadow beefed up a little, because I don't want him to lose any muscle - or not develop enough through a too restricted diet. It's just so tough to get weight on him. I've said it before ... who knew that would ever be hard with a Labrador!
Bear is now 8.4kg at 9 weeks old, so he has put on 1kg in the week. Every morning he looks like he has grown
Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum. I posted in the introductions then saw this thread and wanted to add his weights. I have a male chocolate lab named Axel. He was the smallest of the litter when we got him at 8 weeks weighing in at 7kgs. There were 14 puppies in this litter! The breeder said sometimes the smallest ends up being one of the biggest when they are in their forever homes because they are no longer competing for food? Is that true for any of you? Makes some sense, but guess only time will tell we will love him either way! Here are the weights I have for him at the moment 8 weeks 7kgs 12 weeks 10kgs 16 weeks 15kgs 19 weeks 21.2kgs Very curious how he will turn out! The vet guessed he would end up at 32kgs when Axel was 16 weeks... Axels mom was 32kgs and his dad was 43kgs at 13 months old Here is Axel at 9 weeks Axel at 18 weeks. Loves the water! And at 19 weeks
I try not to worry about weight too much anymore as long as they are nice and slim, with a defined waist and you can feel the ribs without applying pressure.
Lovely boy! Looks like he is going to be a big lad like my Pongo (one of the giants of the forum) - he is 2 years 2 months now and is 41.5kg of muscle...
Yes, I do the feel test almost daily! I can easily feel his ribs with no pressure. Wow! When did Pongo stop gaining weight ?
Hello again! I haven't introduced myself yet, but been lurking a lot! Yogi, my almost 18 week yellow labrador weighs 40 lbs (18 kg)
He put on about a kg per week until he was about 9 months, then began to level off. After a year he stopped getting bigger (ie taller) but continued to fill out with muscle; I think he reached 40 kg at about 18 months. I really, really, really hope he has stopped growing now! (When he is on his lead my usual position is one of "water-skiing" behind him as he ploughs off towards whatever interests him...)
Ok thanks! Lol! I can imagine he would be very strong. Axel already has me stumbling sometimes if he notices a bird or whatever else that interests him. I'm used to my Pomeranian who is 6 pounds
I really, really wish I had worked harder on walking-on-a-lead when he was still small enough to manage. It's a lot harder now!
Don't know if anyone else saw the programme 'The Secret Life of Puppies' last night, but on there they were quoting a rough guide of 2lb weight for every week of age. I'm guessing that doesn't apply to small/medium breeds, just can't imagine what a 52lb (23.5kg) Chihuahua would look like
Yes I saw the programme - loved it....watching the two lab puppies was like ticking a check list for Bailey we also wondered about the 2lbs of weight every week!
I was a little surprised at the 2lbs a week, Juno managed half of that as her normal gain. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. I used to pop into the vets every four weeks to weigh her and I used to predict the weight from one visit to the next. Helped to give more purpose to the recalculation of food portions The best guide is still the glide over the ribs, nice waist and a tummy 'tuck up'
I am also using the glide over the ribs, nice waist and a tummy 'tuck up' to check Bailey is not gaining too much weight (although he is still has a puppy tum after food!) and the vet was happy with his weight gain - also when we start walking him next week that I think will make a difference (we had to delay his vaccinations due to the breeder having his first vaccination done when we asked not to as it was not compatible with the one our vet uses!). Bailey went from 4.6kg at 8 weeks to 6.9kg earlier this week!
