For ages now when we take Baxter out to do his business we say hurry ups and he goes to this plant that's in a planter and sniffs it then goes and pee's lol.. he does it every time! he doesn't eat the plant he just sniffs it. Thankfully he doesn't do it when we are out as carrying a planter about would be kind of silly looking. Any ideas why he does this?
He doesn't pee on that plant? Or the planter? I wonder if someone comes in and pees on that at night? Oban doesn't check out any one thing in particular but we know Tomcats come in at night and he checks their pee spots, which are sometimes fresh enough we can see them. One nitwit, ignorant, inconsiderate neighbour used to let his huge Lab jump the fence into our yard early in the morning and the bad word, bad word dog pee'd on our barbeque. You can bet that got well checked each time Oban went out till we put a stop to it. I have an image in my mind of you carrying that planter anyway.
Could be an accidental training link. Baxter happened to be sniffing the plant, pee'd and was rewarded so in the garden the cue is associated with the sniffing of that plant. Whatever you do, protect that plant
I have you, in my mind, pushing a very large planter about on a trolly. Does he pee on it? I wonder what would happen if you moved it..
No he doesn't pee on the plant or the planter (still does girly squats) just has a sniff and the walls fence are 5/6 feet high lol.. I watched him from the window today when he was out himself, he wandered around then went for a sniff then pee'd not sure why he does it or whether it's been an accidental thing when he was young? He was very fond of the planter as a puppy I may try moving it.. It does have a handle for when we go on holiday
So cute. Our 2 farm cats come in our garden. My dogs will make a bee line for a bush the cats will have marked, sniff for ages then move away and wee so I'm with snowshoe on it possibly being a feline visitor. A 6ft fence won't keep them out if they want to get in. I've seen one of our cats jump onto a gate at least 8ft.
We don't have many cats about our bit but it could be. OH thinks it might be that the plant actually smells like pee He's not a gardener!
He might be right. I noticed with my old lab, and the same thing has happened with Scott and Scout, daffodils get watered a lot. I think there must be something about the smell of daffs. Maybe the plant in the pot smells of something that either encourages Breur to wee or its association with the smell of the plant and having a wee.
