Nugget has really bad diarrhoea - he's 19 weeks. I think it's from a raw beef rib I gave him. He's happy and full of beans - just VERY runny.

I'm reading advice to starve him for 24 hours. Is this wise at his age? I haven't fed him yet today.

Any and all advice welcome. Thanks.

Personally , I wouldn't starve him , is he drinking ? I would make up some chicken and rice , both cooked and cooled , leaving the rice watery and sloppy to help prevent dehydration . Feed him small amounts only and see how he goes, poor love . If it doesn't improve within the day , I would have a chat with your Vet, but its good that he is happy and bouncy

I don't ever deny food if my dog has the runs. I'd just give plain, simple food with plenty of liquid, as per Kate's advice.

Hope he's 'firmed up' soon :)

I found it depended which vet I saw whether the advice was starve or feed. It tended to be the old school vets who said starve. The advice now is to feed little and often with something bland like Kate and Rachel have suggested. Hope he gets back to normal quickly. :)

Mine is very sensitive to new things too so my guess is the rib bone caused it! Chicken and rice as above or scrambled egg and rice worked even better for us. Lots of water in it. Pro-kaolin from Amazon should be in your cupboard as really helps with tummy upsets!! Check he's hydrated enough as they dehydrate quickly when they are young. Mine usually cleared up in a day or so with the above.
I found that until 6 months mine was very sensitive to anything other than his food so the Orozyme rawhide was the only chew we could give him that didn't produce runny tummies! He is now less sensitive although I am still careful and always try out new things in the morning to see how they go down. Pizzles are still a no-no for us sadly but rice bones, rawhide strips, lamb rib bones are all fine.
Good luck and hope Nugget gets better soon

I would feed little and often as well. Fish and rice is also very good. As Sam says its worth having some ProKolin+ in the cupboard as well. If Juno's had a tummy upset I feed fish and rice until I get a firm poo and then start to re-introduce the kibble mixed with the fish and rice. I have also used Chappie with her but not sure on suitable for Nugget because of age.

Hope all improves very soon xx

Thank you - I've given a small amount of chicken and rice and will continue with that for today. Gosh, it's hard though - he's a real 'foodie' type of dog and is clearly VERY hungry. He's following me around, jumping up all over the place looking for scraps of food and biting me more than ever!

One day I'm sure I will look back on all the trials and tribulations of Nugget's puppy days and smile - but right now it's bloody hard work (sorry if I sound a bit fed up lol. I was up late cleaning up poo and again this morning while I was trying to get the kids ready for school).

It's always chicken and rice for us, too, very sloppy. I don't really reduce the amount I feed them, since I find the C&R binds them up well.

I'd also say, if you want to continue feeding beef ribs, don't be discouraged. It's perfectly normal that dogs get runny when a new protein source is introduced. It's a case of trying it again a couple of times over the next couple of weeks and he'll gradually get used to it.

Lottie often has stomach upsets as she has a very sensitive stomach :(. I use slippery elm when she has a problem - a couple of links below:

    http://holvet.net/dr.-yasson-s-arti...th/slippery-elm-for-better-pet-digestion.html
    http://www.dogsupsetstomach.com/remedies/slippery-elm-to-treat-diarrhea/

    Dr Yasson's article says:
I use this herb more than any other in my practice! It provides superb relief, and has kept many patients from hospitalization. It is a soothing nutritive herb which is perfectly suited for sensitive or inflamed mucous membrane lining of the digestive system. The bark contains mucilage and tannins that act as demulcent, emollient, protectorant, and astringent. You might think of it as a soothing internal bandage coating the digestive tract for its entire length. Imagine the relief for your pet to have a jelly-like coating soothing in an eosophagus (food pipe) burned by acrid vomitus, or in an ulcerated colon. This herb makes a huge difference. It is easy to make and has a very bland taste which makes it easy to add to tasty things.

I buy slippery elm in powder form from a health shop, make it into a paste with hot water and add it to Lottie's food if she's ok to eat (if she's clearly starving  then I do give her small amounts of food). If I think she's better not eating for a bit, I give her slippery elm soup, perhaps with some chicken water to make it taste better. I hope Nugget gets better quickly.

Quite possibly a combination of the beef rib and the pizzle. How's Nugget now? You have every reason to feel fed up as Nugget has had and still has his moments, but you will forget it as he gets older and once the biting has stopped - think of it as a little like having a baby with colic, followed by teething, followed by teenage tantrums :)

I use pumpkin purée or let my pups eat carrot sticks. It helps firm it up quickly. I either put the pumpkin purée with their food or I put it in a kong and freeze it and let them have it for a "treat". Or I just give them carrot sticks to eat up.

keeps them busy and it helps and the bonus is they both love

We also do Chicken and Rice. Cooper had the runs about a month ago and they lasted about 30 hrs. We thought she might have eaten several bully sticks, but weren't really sure. There was evidence of breaking and entering in the pantry we keep the dog treats in, and some bullly sticks were missing. We didn't know how many or which dog got what. Anyway the Chicken and Rice worked and she was fine the 2nd day.

They have to have access to plenty of water so they don't get dehydrated. Probably not as big a problem as when they are throwing up though.

Hope his tummy settles soon. We spent a long time on chicken and rice as Harley had a very sensitive tummy. Make sure he is drinking lots and if he becomes lerthargic or vomiting then contact your vet ASAP.

Thank you so much everyone. We stuck to chicken and rice all day - and he just had a perfectly firm poo. The difference is quite astonishing actually - I really thought we were in for a trip to the vet. I will give him half kibble/half chicken and rice tomorrow to make sure he stays settled. I will avoid all pizzles and bones for a bit, though - which is a shame as they did stop him biting us for a while. :)

Let his tummy settle for a few days and then try just a pizzle or a bone one day and see how he is, perhaps leave for a day or two and then offer the other and see how he goes. New foods and treats can have unexpected results. Good to hear that Nugget is feeling better :)

Yes, thank you. And we had a completely poo/pee free night too, so I think that taking his food up earlier is helping with the night time toilet training. :)
