Well done Charlie, we are in France at the moment so will keep checking in to see how he is doing. Great work Helen
Yippee Mabel is booked in for Scent 1 Foundation. Only draw back is the nearest venue only runs the course once a year in October. Very excited already.
How did I miss all this??? Helen I a, delighted to hear you have found something that has hooked Charlie!! Wonderful - this is such great news! Thanks to @JulieT who started the Scentwork thread.
I think I may try this with poppy, I think that one of the reasons that her recall is so bad is that once her nose is down she hears nothing, maybe this would be another way to help us bond.I need to start thinking out side the box with her. I just love this site.
Hi Nicola, you should give it a go but start inside first keeping it quite simple. I started in our yard and have now progressed to our garden hiding food and the stinky toy in some quite difficult places covering quite a lot of ground. Charlie is really enjoying himself and being half Pointer his nose is never off the ground It really helps his focus on me for instructions which he doesn't need too much of and his steadiness out of sight waiting for me to go and hide stuff. x Thanks Karen, it's working a treat but I am taking it slowly to keep his enthusiasm and you never know one day he might just be able to do a little on a walk which would be just wonderful x
If people are interested in having a go at tracking there is an article on getting started with this on page 13 in the current issue of our dog club magazine: http://www.actcdc.org.au/new/tgc/2016/TGC_May_2016.pdf You can do it on your own and using treats There are a couple of methods described in the article.
Think Juno must have some pointer in her bloodlines with how her nose is stuck to the ground at times So pleased for you that Charlie is enjoying the scentwork so much
Sounds like Charlie and you, Helen @charlie are really enjoying the scent work. I'm loving reading about your fun times
I did some more scent work training in the garden today with Charlie, but wait for it, I think he needs it to be more challenging, I know I never thought the day would come when I would be able to say that I am very lucky that I have a very large garden so I have been hiding the stinky toy in some very challenging places e.g. under things, burried under gravel, on higher surfaces, in trees, in conifers, plants with scent and he has no trouble at all finding it every time without any direction from me So what next any ideas please? x Thank you x
Can you try and put the toy into something, Like at the airport when they find drugs in suitcases, or make the item with the smell smaller?
