they are very popular with some round here and are nothing but trouble for the rest of us. A lot of the rescue centres have loads of them in at the moment. They seem to have taken over from the staffies in popularity
One which was loose picked up my really old deaf(13 years old failing eyesight too) male lab weighing 34 kgs by the neck and shook him. We were just walking on a park and it ran straight up and grabbed him no usual dog sniffing or preamble, it just hit into him at the gallop. Doug was hurt and had to be rested and his pain meds were uped until he was well enough to be able to walk well as it hurt his back.

If we see one loose most of us walking round here go the other way they are just so un predictable. Its never ended well for my dogs, never met one that I've felt safe having my dogs around, with good reason

Huskys are not easy dogs to have. My dad has had 1 malamute mix and now has a husky rescue, she's about 5 years old now. She's a great dog and we love her to death, but man she's not easy. She's jumpy, (he lives part of the time in NYC), and anything - a pigeon, bike, subway, skateboard, makes her start barking and jumping around. He's doing a good job of training her but I think there's just some things with huskies that you can't train. They're meant to run and run and run. At least once a week she escapes from his house and he has to drive after her in the car searching for where she's gone. Luckily the people in the town know her by now, but they can be crazy dogs. One thing he did was buy a scooter which he can put attach her to with a harness, and she pulls it like a dog sled except no need for snow, and it has 2 huge wheels and even comes with brakes. It's a great way to get all of her energy out. But you need the time and resources to dedicate to them otherwise I just don't think it's a good idea.

Huskies are beautiful dogs and have been become very popular, so we see more of them. It seems more a case of these dogs being in the wrong hands and owned by people who are attracted to them for their looks, maybe an element of status around them too. They do need training, and a healthy respect/management of their high prey drive.
Also there is a belief that the pack leader theory in domesticated dogs is a bit outdated, and lacking in evidence to support this way of thinking.

Let's be honest, there is too many people around that shouldn't even be close to any kind of animals . I love those people that just stand screaming at their dog stuff like : don't u understand that you are doing it wrong you dumb dog etc when it comes down to that it's their duty to show the right way or the dog won't know what to be expected by them. And if those kind of people get a hold of a husky it would most likely end up horrible awful for the husky. They are very beautiful and intelligent, and I would love to have one in the future. But as a first dog I chose to get a lab since I knew a bit about them and I fell in love with my neighbors lab.

In my opinion if this person that started the thread never had a dog before and really want a husky. You should then make sure you got all kinds of information about the breed and be ready to put a lot time and pre hand know how to stimulate all it needs. People living in apartments with huskys work out sometimes but I wouldn't recommend a husky to live stuffed into an apartment.

I just felt like the need to say that not all huskys are bad, I fell for the old one that my father in law had that died a year ago. Even being 15 years old and never been near babies he was the best with my daughter, he was deaf but yet kept an eye on her and if she tried to crawl somewhere high he came barking at me showing me where she was at. I am sorry I wrote a lot now again haha.

My uncle has Huskies in Cape Town South Africa. He takes them for runs on the beach and on his hospital rounds.

I know a few huskies that are lovely, but they are owned by distance runners who do canicross. You can't really exercise a husky off-lead very easily but they need tons of exercise. If you're experienced with dogs and you can run with huskies then go for it, but unfortunately I think a lot of huskies are in unsuitable homes (which is why shelters are full of them now- at least when Staffies were the breed du jour they do make more suitable pets)

I think you should do some serious research on dog breeds and how they fit what you want/expect. Huskies and Labs are so different that the choice between them should be pretty obvious, if you know about the breed and what it is that you want. I bought my first Malamute without understanding enough about the breed. I spent 14 years with a dog that hated water, killed small animals and and considered "Come" to be a suggestion, not a command. On the other hand he was great skijoring.
