Is it safe to brush a puppy's teeth with coconut oil? My boy loves the stuff. Heard it's great for their coats too.
I suppose you could....it's not really necessary to use anything. I would have thought coconut oil would be pretty messy and not at all convenient - without any benefits. I do use a paste, CET - it is mildly abrasive and I find it removes any visible staining very well.
After doing some more research online it seems according to lots of Vets it's really good for them (video link below). Keeps their teeth clean, breath fresh, aids in digestion, and is great for their coats. Many people claim it has helped their dogs resolve a host of medical issues and it's good for them both internally and externally. So I guess I'll give it a whirl!
I don't think the vet was advocating brushing a dog's teeth with coconut oil but that the internal ingestion would help.
Yep, nothing about brushing teeth with coconut oil there - which is surprising really, since apparently coconut oil is good for absolutely everything and anything, was waiting for the 'click here to buy' link!
Dog toothpastes are great, they have plaque 'killing' enzymes in them, which apparently human toothpastes don't ~ not sure why.
If a dog's teeth were bad, coconut oil wouldn't do much to fix that. You would need something stronger and more abrasive to scale down the teeth where they need to be. So there is a place for commercial stuff and there is never a one size fits all for ANYthing. The video was just to point out all the benefits of coconut oil and I'm sure that vet would agree that brushing with it would be just as beneficial as the other application methods. I like that with using coconut oil, I KNOW what's going in his mouth as opposed to some of the ingredients on those "doggie toothpaste" that requires a chemist to figure out. It has also been known to clear up bad breath so another big bonus in my book. But whatever works for you and your dog is what you need to go with. The bottom line is that the teeth and gums are getting taken care of and helping to keep our sweet furry friends around longer.

I brush Mabel's teeth with doggie toothpaste she loves it, but like most Labradors she loves anything that closely resembles food. .
Speaking of that coconut is so great, I read a lot about apple cider vinegar too that it's great for a lot other things. Such as I found a home made flea shampoo, good for dry skin , eye problems (list goes on) I was curious if anyone here has used apple cider vinegar for anything?
And helps my joints with a dose of manuka honey......don't know anything about giving it to dogs though....
I seen a lot articles about all kinds of uses for it for dogs, since there was so many articles I was curious if anyone actually do it. No one I know with dogs even heard about using it for dogs.
While I don't want to seem a complete spoil sport for those in favour of home remedies....please do be careful with these, they can be far from harmless. And they are most dangerous when they take the place of proper vet treatment. The first video above recommends using apple cider vinegar from everything from serious skin problems to kennel cough. If you dog suffers from either of these things, see a vet. The second video starts off by recommending you talk to your vet before starting to clean your dog's ears - this is extremely sensible. Just to remind members of the forum policy on such matters (which was introduced a while back, after a hot debate on whether apple cider vinegar would protect your dog against ticks ).
I gave Belle some supplements we were given by the vet (I think they're rubbish by the way) in a big teaspoon of coconut oil....OH came home to a slick of runny poo all over the front room carpet. No more coconut oil for Belle. Luckily, I love it.
Well, the only thing I really got curious about was if anything be has used it to bath them against fleas (there's some home made shampoo claiming to kill fleas). Millie don't got fleas but my curiosity kinda rised since there is a lot articles but no people seem to use it, I mean if u can't find people using it how can they then make all articles.
Yuck. That hasn't happened with me yet and my pup eats it daily. Guess it depends on the dog and the amount you give him. Not all digestive systems are created equal. I know that large amounts of coconut oil given to a dog can cause diarrhea or greasy stools while his body adjusts to the change in diet. If you start with small amounts, such as ¼ teaspoon per day for small dogs or puppies and 1 teaspoon for large dogs, or even just a dab if your dog's constitution is sensitive. But in your case it sounds like maybe just skip it completely.
Hi Millie's mom. It's possible that just because you haven't found anyone (yet) who has personally used something on their dog doesn't mean it hasn't effective to anyone. If you've checked to make sure whatever it is is safe, I don't see the harm in trying whatever it is. Every dog is different so there isn't any one size fits all for anything. Even this thread is an example of the differences. Someone gave their dog coconut oil and it got diarrhea. Mine eats it an poops perfect turds. There are a millions of opinions among experts (vets, professional trainers, breeders, etc.) on just about EVERY topic related to raising a dog and many of them disagree. So in the end, all you can do is consult the professionals you trust, evaluate the research and data, consider how it may or may not apply, and go with what you feel is right for you and your dog/situation.
