Soooo clever! We can't put food on the ground, ever, with the pups - it makes things more challenging!
Yes, I was. I thought she was good. Nice focus that wasn't entirely because she was a tiny bit scared.
Looking great! You wouldn't know that was a first outing 'on the floor' from her behaviour in the vid.
We did another little walk this morning, along the road which was busy with people walking to the beach, and a fair number of dogs, lots of workmen around, and gardeners etc. making a noise. She was completely unfazed, already very interested in other dogs and people but we didn't stop for anyone, and didn't have any other dogs coming over, so that was good. She then met the lovely girl dog next door and played for a bit - I tried to keep interrupting them, but Betsy was very focused on playing. I thought that might have been a bit of a mistake, because it would have been better to have her be calm around another dog at first, but it just didn't go that way. Nevermind, the rest of the outing went very well.
Betsy is working on recalling while ignoring a person rattling a food bowl.....she found it difficult at first, but soon got the hang of it. [vid] recall by food bowl by julieandcharlie julieandcharlie, on Flickr
If Betsy was in the bowl and I was the one being recalled, I'd be going straight to the bowl to snaffle your puppy
Charlie says anytime you want to send a self addressed envelope he'll stuff Bitey McBite Face in it and post it back.
She really is doing super...I'm watching you so enviously...Dexter came to me at 5 months I probably found the forum when he was 6 months and didn't get to work on recall training until 7 months..maybe later..I wouldn't know what I know now if it wasn't for owning Dexter ...so through him I'm more aware of starting right....next time.... Oh and looking at her I hope there's a Betsy 'in my future x
Betsy's training session tonight was a 15 min lead walk, then placeboards and hand target (which I'll use for visual recall and also a hand delivery for a retrieve). Betsy is doing ok on her lead, and she is very good at ignoring people, bikes, skate boards etc. She is not as good at ignoring other dogs, but still ok I think. No doubt this will all fall apart when she gets older but so far so good.... I'm really pleased with her placeboards - we've already taken this to the training field so ready to go on cue now and distance introduced. She has started doing steps too now, which she was very dubious about at first - so I started luring her with treats. In the end she was waiting for treats and so I just abandoned her at the top/bottom of steps and went on up/down them, she then trotted after me as good as gold. training by julieandcharlie julieandcharlie, on Flickr
