Hi, I'm a newbie! I have a 5 month old chocolate female lab and she's a nightmare! She is still mouthing so hard. Her baby teeth are still coming out. I have 6 year old twins who are very scared of her and I have to keep her separate all the time. She has knocked over my son twice and he screamed which made her jump all over him and bite his head. Hubby also not happy with her. Will it ever get better or is she not suitable for young children? Help
Hi there, yes it will get better, promise. Read some old threads on here are you realise that it does. I had 6 year old twins when we got Meg. I just kept them apart at this stage. It's was not worth the stress or trauma for all. Very quickly , can't remember quite when the phase passed and they are all best buddies. Now Meg is 2 and boys nearly 8 and it's the dream child/dog relationship we always wanted. They all play out together and are inseparable . She is a normal lab and just need to be patient and keep up the training and you will have that happy family. I have a 4 year old and Molly is almost 5 months. I always have to keep them apart, it's more jumping over her and eating her hair than the biting now. I take heart from posts like the one above that it will get better but I think this is pretty normal at this age.
My dog is 6 months now and still doing this... totally feels like it's never going to end! If I look back on how bad he was a couple months ago vs now, it gives me hope because he does have a bit more control than he did, but oh man.. ready for this phase to be over!
Hi and welcome - I have a 5 month old boy who is currently teething...don't have children....therefore my OH and I can be chomped on. Depending on his excitement level depends on how hard it is. It is however getting better, slowly. There is a great article on the main site about puppy biting and impulse control. Sure others that have children can advise about keeping them apart. I am sure your husband will fall under the Lab Wonder Spell - when we first got our boy my OH said - no dogs on furniture...Bailey is on the sofa now more than us! He is also testing about getting on the bed (however although front paws can get up, he just can't quite get his back legs up - give it another few days and I am sure that will change! Thank you Angela yes they were - was running out to the vets when I posted that and didn't have time to look for the links. They are very interesting to read and I am working on them!
My new puppy has now been permanently renamed Bitey (it was Betsy). Bitey McBite Face. She draws blood at least twice a day, my arms look like self harming is my main hobby and she has even got my face twice! She will grow out of it and it will stop. Hopefully soon! Training a hand touch with her keeping her mouth closed really seems to have helped. We called her Miss Velociraptor before doing that!
It most definitely gets better. It may feel like it lasts for ever but once you're over it you realize it was just a short time. Axel stopped mouthing around 4 months. Can't remember for sure anymore. One day I just realized I hadn't bled in a few days He did have a few hiccups coming in to teenage years. But the force wasnt behind it. I think he knew it was bad so there was no pressure just felt his teeth. he's almost 7 months now and I ran through the back yard yesterday and he got excited and chased me and jumped up and mouthed my arms, no pressure again but I do have bruises from him jumping on me So they do learn! Some quicker than others but they do learn
