Along with the veg we also seem to be growing an enormous quantity of snails. Don't like to use the deadly blue pellets because there are toads and slow worms lurking in the compost and sheds. However Molly loves nothing better than playing with anything that crunches and she has just discovered some bulky snails I know they carry worms and are not a good thing for pups to chomp their way through. Any one got any suggestions for a deterrent? I wonder how many more surprises await that we hadn't anticipated
Yes we also went through a snail phase! Thankfully it didn't last long, we found the thing was to distract with something else, treat or toy always at the ready. Snails can carry lung worm so important to ensure worming is kept up to date, our vet has recommend Milbemax as it covers a range of worms including lung worm. Winnie is now 17 weeks and she is clearly teething, so lots of toys to chew! One thing she did do in the garden was play tug with the clematis. Not much left on the fence now, she's a serious pruner!!
Go out late every evening and collect them all up and then take them somewhere else - far away! A lot of people kill them but I couldn't do that.
Thanks Branston1080 and Stacia. I could be seen dashing around the garden at 5 this morning in tattered dressing gown and flipflops chucking snails over the hedge into the lane. I must have looked like mad-woman. Mind you, both old Alf the cocker and Molly thought it was great fun
You could always get some ducks...they will solve your snail problem. It's not unusual for pups to eat snails, but from what I've seen they typically grow out of it. So you could just keep up the worming and wait it out. Although ducks do make good pets...
If you ever find a solution to snails in the garden, millions of gardeners will be waiting to pay you a lot of money.... Do the usual things to keep the snail population down (I have frogs that make it to my garden from a nearby pond and they do a good job of eating the slugs and snails ), make sure you use a wormer to protect against lungworm, and distract your puppy when you can. Apart from that there isn't much else to be done.
Bailey was a nightmare with snails when he was younger - scooping them up in his mouth and then bringing them into the house! We used to scan the garden and pick up any we saw and (sorry to my neighbour for this) throw them over the garden fence...we live in a town terraced house so our garden is surrounded by other people's gardens. He now doesn't seem that interested in them anymore, although ants on the other hand they are entertaining for hours and on the odd occasion a tasty little snack apparently
Now funnily enough we do in Dubai....black slugs! Loads of snails here in Yorkshire....proper substantial snails with their houses on their back that climb up the windows ! I'm loving them but wouldn't if it was my own house and garden!
Oh, weird. We have black slugs here in Andorra, but not seen a one in Spain. There are snails in certain places (the very tasty Catalan snails), but not where we are, luckily
My boy Ted is very interested I'm snails too. I worry about lungworms. I tell the snails to run but they just seem a bit sluggish.
When Homer was young, defore he had all his lung worm injections he LOVED snails. He'd roll them around in his mouth then go crunch just as I tried to take it from him. I did not want to use pellets especially as he was so young so put out some beer traps. The snails are atracted to the smell of the beer in little pots, crawl in then drown. I put out the little pots around the raised flowerbeds. Without me noticing, Homer had somehow climbed up onto the flowerbed knocked the pots over and was lapping up the beer!
My 2 are in the snail phase, especially Milly but also toads & the hot weather is bringing out the lizards
