Holly is on Nutrivet Instinct which has a very high rating on many review sites it is grain free and its the Ten Fish flavour so its all pretty much meat content now my question is her poo is very dark brown i got in a panic last night about black poo means blood = PANIC STATIONS but its dark brown i actually brought the poo bag back home this morning to inspect it was defo brown and not black and it is brown can i safely assume this is just the kibble it is very dark in colour and resembles the poo colour also i gather with high meat content it doesn't just zip through their systems ? i fed her at 5pm last night she didn't poo until 7.45 this morning TIA Jen and Holly x
I have found that the higher meat content in premium kibble, means my dogs poo is very dark brown. I have noticed that if you feed cheap dog food the poo has more bulk and is much lighter in colour. Can't believe I have just typed this!!!
Poo is a very good way to judge an animals health. You should see the ones we use at the hospital. Very descriptive theres even pictures
this is pretty much what i was thinking lol i cant believe i actually brought the bag home and poked at it with a gloved hand !! dont think ive done that with the kids poop ! hers is formed but soft defo not 'kickable' not runny but wouldnt want to kick it to test the theory
I do think it might also depends on the dog.... Last week Betsy and Charlie were both on Orijen biologically appropriate (but I'm switching Charlie back to his old food now). Betsy has slightly soft but reasonably formed, very stinky, very large dark brown poos. Charlie has light coloured, extremely firm, small, odourless poos. Charlie says it's because Betsy is an uncouth no-better-than-she-ought-to-be urchin.

What are you feeding Charlie on? Both my dogs do a large amount, poo bag is full up, could do with small poos!
Charlie is normally on SC21 - a vet prescription Royal Canin food - a single protein source, and a single carbohydrate source (duck and tapioca). He went onto this food when he developed some sensitivities (the vet thinks because of the long time he spent on anti-inflammatories). Anyway, for a while - even though I had researched the food carefully - I had a nagging doubt whether Charlie would be better off on something else - I'm probably a sucker for marketing . So I tried him on Betsy's Orijen (told you I was a sucker for marketing....). His poos were fine, but he was sick. So I've switched him back to the SC21. Anyway, he has just had a full range of blood tests, and all came back clear for all functions that could be tested. He looks great, is thin, and has great muscles - so I have absolutely no reason really to change his food.

actually was to post the ingredients to her food but hey if were in 2 jobbie pics i am happy to oblige out a walk just now and her poo is brown formed to startstart with and the tail end tonight was mucusy greenish should i be concerned? she did have a carrott yday and today for first time but foods her usual she was nibbling at something on a walk last night but christ knows what !
Thanks @JulieT, I am a sucker for marketing as well! I am sure my dogs are happy, it is me that wants the change, however, I would like them to do slightly smaller poos Charlie certainly looks a very fit and well muscled dog, don't think you will get quite that look with a yellow Lab as their coats don't shine in the same way.
This happens time to time. I wouldn't worry too much. Just keep an eye on it. We're all avid poo-watchers here
