Hi got 2 questions, our pepper was doing well , when she need it to go she made noise we took her outside the create and all good. So now we changed her bedding in the create made it bit more comfy and as some here might read she had CPV so she had to have special food but as that's all behind us she is having now normal puppy food since he last 3 days and even she does poo 4 time a day and last sound 10pm she now does a poo in her create for 2 nights in the row at 5-am could be that the change of food is making her do it? She is not even making noise to get out?

Second question she now 15 weeks and had all her vacations done , and as she spent really the last 7 weeks inside we want to take her to the beach (obviously no swimming) but is it ok for puppies in that age to run around and get a bit excited?! I am not sure where i read it but some people say the puppies need to be certain age until they can run around on the beach as its not so good for the bone formation?

    Many thanks
    Philipp

We live a couple of minutes drive from the beach so I took Molly there as soon as we were cleared by the vet to go out. And yes of course puppies can run around - and getting excited is what puppies do best. ;)

Definately take her to the beach and have fun :). I would let her in the water if she wants to, it won't hurt her in any way.

What you do have to be careful of is not to over-exercise your pup (to protect his growing bones). Have you heard of the 5 minute rule? 5 mins exercise per month of age, so a 15 week old would be about 20 minutes. But people seem to interpret this different ways:

    • 5 min rule but you can exercise them twice a day (20 mins morning and 20 mins evening)
    • 5 min rule but you have to split it between morning and evening (10 mins each)
    • 5 min rule only applies to pavement walking, off-leash you can go for longer
Would love to hear what the experienced dog owners of the forum say.

We started both our pups wading at 8 or 9 weeks, and then gave them a chance to swim once they had their shots. Beach and water should be fine. She may drink salt water and get sick from it. Tilly did, and Cooper did not.

It is just not that accurate. :) It's just a really rough guide, and a bit out of date these days (when we have things like 'puppy culture' becoming popular that gives a lot more detail). The 5 minute rule was just made up by someone to give a rough guide, and no-one really knows what it means in terms of once a day, twice a day, pavement is ok/not ok....playing with other dogs counts, or it doesn't...free play counts, or it doesn't...and so on.

My puppy gets 15 minutes off lead where she has to keep up with me or my older dog a day, or a 15 minutes lead walk. She gets a couple of sessions of free play trotting round the garden, digging and so on. 2 or 3 training sessions that involves repetitive exercises, and a lot of training sessions that don't. She gets kongs, and play with me (eg tug on a non slip surface), and enrichment play (eg kibble in boxes, puzzles etc) for quite a few sessions through the day, depending on how much time I have.
