My dog likes the taste of his urine and other dogs urine......

Ok, Im sorry if this is weird or disgusting but Champ has a thing where he licks other dogs urine off the grass and off lamposts, and his own feet....He drools and his mouth kind of opens and shuts like a fish is it hormones? Does he just like the taste? Because he really resists when I try and pull him away from the area of interest. Is it just a 'quirk' of his? and is it just my dog?

 

My trainer had a dog who did that, only female dog urine but it didn't matter if they were spayed or not. He was intact and meant to be used at stud ( not a Lab) and had racked up an impressive array of titles. He had a couple of other issues so she neutered him when he was three years old and it still took months and months of work for her to get him over this urine licking. Anything in her story that's the same for you?

 

My boy does I don't think it's that unusual in male animals. Horses do it too. Rory pulls a face like wine taster. You can see he's procressing it in a very concentrated way and he then chatters his teeth sometimes

 

I know this is a problem with some entire dogs (I don't know about neutered dogs). Charlie will do it time to time - sometimes it smells so good, he has to lick it aswell. Thankfully, not all that often...

 

Harv will do this sometimes too. The teeth chattering is weird isn't it?

 

My old Mally did this...licking female urine and funny teeth chattering ! Stopped poor lad when he was castrated at 9 ...

 

Shadow has done it a couple of times. He's never done the chattering, but our old neutered family dog did that. With Shadow, it's a very delicate lick, which almost looks as if he knows it's disgusting but he just can't help himself

 

At least Shadow tries to show some self control when he does it...lol

Rory is a bit weird. I spend so much time with them that I do find I notice stuff that can sometimes be missed. It's not something I encourage but just its just boy stuff.

 

I was told long time ago they do it because there is a female dog in heat. It doesn't matter if she is fixed or not, she still has the sent when she would be on her normal cycle.

I don't know how much truth is to that or not but when I take Stryker back to the vet on the 30th I will see what she has to say about it.

Haha i'm glad Champ isn't the only one! The teeth chattering fish mouth thing is hilarious!

 

Champ hasnt been neautered and no other issues since his ear infection a few months ago but I think its all dog urine, not just females because he does it with his own too.

 

I didnt realise horses did it too! I learnt about that organ thing animals have on top of their mouths, that when they smell something they taste it too.

 

Champ does it 95% of the time he walks past a place where a dog has peed he wemt through a phase of eating his own poo...but I know they do that sometimes.

 

Sometimes they do it and i could never see anything but i went out in the snow and there was loads stains that I could now see and pawprints. I know I have a sad sad life
