"Someone" forgot to ensure the store cupboard (AKA spare loo) was latched shut. I've just come in to find Coco has stolen, opened and eaten the best part of half a 700g jar of Sun Pat peanut butter. Salted. I'm sure he'll be fine, but guessing it might have an exciting effect on his bowels. I'm glad I'm not first in from work this evening. So cross with myself.
Ooops! Good luck! At least our regular PB brands like Sun Pat aren't made with xylitol, which is very poisonous to dogs. He should be fine, maybe a bit explosive...
Does any peanut butter have Xylitol? We don't buy any products with fake sugar, but I never even thought about peanut butter. I recall seeing Xylitol in sugarless gum, but I don't buy that either.
<groan> Well I have just picked up a large, firm, light-tan coloured poo from the garden (I so wanted to sniff it, but resisted). The first poo since the theft. I am surprised at the quality of it and the length of time it took to appear - maybe peanut butter is a binder.
Yup, I saw some warnings and I looked it up. It's more common in the US than in the UK. In the UK it tends to be restricted to PBs aimed at the fitness market (yes, fit freaks eat tonnes of PB!). Thanks for the update, Sue. Quite delightfully descriptive
When Snowie was much younger, I used to smear a hoof with peanut butter and leave that with him when we'd go out at night. One evening I forgot to put the peanut butter away, left it on the kitchen counter. Got home later to a VERY happy, waggily dog and the aroma of peanuts in the air. Found the entire tub of peanut butter almost licked clean. Thankfully it was organic! The poos that came out looked and smelled like peanut butter. What a waste of expensive, organic peanut butter -- he didn't appear to digest it or absorb any of its nutrients! There was no explosive diarrhea or other ill effects. But then, my boy must have a cast iron gut because he scavenges and picks up who knows what with no ill effects (except sometimes gooey eyes from allergies no doubt). I have some memory that he had gooey eyes after the peanut butter binge.
