I went picking figs this evening; we have several on the land in different states of neglect, but they're all cropping pretty well at the moment. I obviously took the dogs with me for a little walk and to keep me company. As I was testing figs for ripeness, Willow stuck her nose in and grabbed one. Well, that was it - she now knows that ripe fig is gooooooood and she proceeded to make her way round all the lower branches, selecting the ripest fruits and guzzling them down.
I think she'll be OK. After being very delicate when she was younger, she's grown into the dog with the iron constitution But, if not.... I just hope you're right and it waits until morning
Hehe, no side-effects yet. Willow and I shared another one yesterday, when she got over-excited during almond picking and I had to take her away to calm down for a bit. We have a couple of trees with the dark figs and a couple with the green ones, plus a couple more where the fruit is too young to know. The green are my favourite, I think. Yummers.
We went fig-picking again last night. We collected about 5kg, lovely. Willow helped herself to lots on the lower branches, while Shadow did his impression of a Malinois, leaping and hanging off the higher branches to get to those figs. This evening, I found a poo which, to my reckoning, was about 95% fig.
Just don't read about the sex life of a fig not eaten one since seeing a documentary on it as a kid - scared for life
I read a fascinating article about them a few nights ago. Here, I had to dig it out to share it with you all... http://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/love-the-fig?mbid=social_facebook
After @Oberon telling me that horses love carob, I thought I'd collect a big bag from our trees to give to a lovely lady who let us take a load of manure from her horses a couple of weeks ago. I say "let us take", but I think she was quite glad of someone to take it away! Anywho, we needed it, so some carob by means of thanks would be a nice token. I started collecting, the dogs rather nonplussed about the whole thing, until Willow decided to see what all the fuss was about. After a hesitant start, it turns out that she absolutely loves the stuff. I can see where this is going, we're going to have no crops to do anything with, and I'm going to have a black Lab the size of the house...
