We got home with our Loki about 2pm. He was a very good boy on the 1hr30min journey home. He only whined quietly a couple of times, didn't go to the toilet, no sick, just licked my hand then slept for a while. When home he went out in the garden and went to the toilet then came in and started eating some kibble and had some water. At first he was taking bits of kibble out eating a bit further from his bowl. It's been mostly raining heavily this afternoon so every time we take him out we get a bit wet and can't stay out for long but he seems to love it outside and often sits at the door whining to go out which we don't until he's quiet. He's only allowed in the kitchen/diner at the moment and so far has stuck to one half of the kitchen and either next to the door or under tables and chairs. When outside he's been very good running to me when I move about which I praise him for. We've been feeding him kibble from our hands and also dropped some bits in his crate which he stayed in for a couple of minutes (door open) while I was still in the kitchen but when he next went to sleep for a while he layed by the door so not sure why he didn't sleep in the crate but maybe he will once he is used to sleeping in it at night. Here's a few photos!
Thanks everyone. I'll probably post most of my questions about him here, if that's okay? Rather than making new threads all the time. I have a first question! So we have brought Loki up to bed in our room with us suggested as an option by Pippa. Popped him in his crate with a cover over the top and a little bit of the sides, however he had started crying almost straight away. I thought if he was next to us he would be okay? If he's going to be crying would we be better off just putting him downstairs anyway? He's heavy breathing so he's obviously quite stressed Tried the soft car crate as well when he wasn't settling as he was fine in that in the car and the top opens so feels less enclosed but he's still not happy I know I can't expect too much as it's his first night but don't know what to do for the best to keep him happy
Xena cried and cried the first couple of nights despite being in the bedroom with us. It petered off after a couple of nights (be consistent!) and there was not a peep by the end of the first week. A little bit of crying on her first night in the living room (she was in our room a strict 1 week) but fine from then on. Just be consistent, that's my very amateur advice.
Thanks. He did get a little better over the night, mainly from the early hours. He would whine but settled quicker and his panting calmed down. He has been sick a bit of clear liquid this morning, I guess because of the stress or if he was hungry? And he wouldn't eat his breakfast straight away but is some of it eating it now.
He is lovely... Those first few days and weeks can be pretty stressful, for you and your puppy both. As long as he is drinking and seems normal in himself I wouldn't worry about a little bit of vomit. Are you feeding him the same food as the breeder?
To be honest, he's doing surprisingly well really and been very good with the children so far and vice versa. Yes, he has Eukanuba large breed puppy food. Still on the small bag given to us by the breeder and have ordered a large bag
I would keep him with you, the stress will be worse downstairs away from you. Keep an eye on his drinking, if he isn't drinking much put a little honey in the water. Put some warm water in his food. You don't need to soak it but warm water helps as the food can be very dry for them. If he's running around and playing normally don't worry about the sick. But, if he's lethargic and not 'puppyish' go straight to the vet. Be ready for the crocapup to arrive - they take a few days to find their paws then --- wham!! ...
