Which puppy food was your puppy on when you brought them home?

We shall be collecting our puppy next week. I was asking the breader and he'll be on Beta. I was researching puppy food in the last few days and Beta doesn't get very good reviews and I am a bit concerned, the ingredients composition isn't very impressive, high on carbohydrates, it has 16% rehydrated meat and animal derivatives: minimum 4% chicken. In some of the reviews though people said that they were perfectly happy with the food and puppies were doing well on it. So I would appreciate if you could share with me what food did your puppies came home with and how it worked out for you? And for those of you who decided to change, when did you swap to something else? The breeder was saying to let the dog on this food for as long as possible, perhaps a year before changing. But I don't think I want to stick with the food for that long. I wouldn't want to rush it either. Any advice what would be reasonable? Many thanks.

Xena was on Eukanuba large breed puppy, and I kept her on that until I got through the massive 15 kg bag (just this week!). I didn't like the texture (always bits of dust on the kibble which made it unpleasant to handle as training treats) and I just didn't like how bulky it was. I gave her a third less than recommended and that was still 300 g per day!

I've switched to Orijen large breed puppy. No dusty texture on the kibble, yay! 80% protein which I like. Smaller poops it seems but it's only day 2 of the switch being complete. Now I've got to play around with quantities. In NZ it's only slightly more expensive than the Eukanuba, but you feed less so it'll be much better value.

Loki is also currently on Eukanuba as that's what he was started off with at the breeder but I think we're going to change to Orijen too, sooner rather than later.
Eukanuba isn't the worst but Orijen is a lot better, however it's 3x the price here

He was on a raw diet but she switched him over to kibble for us. I'm blanking on what it was called, had a pink label  He's on Lily's Kitchen now but after having a look at Orijen, we might switch to that if it's the better food, and it's actually cheaper per kg than Lily's.

A year is odd, never heard that before. We slowly introduced the new food over the course of a week.

While having a look at dog food, this made me laugh...rather apt for our little crocopups

I can't even remember what Meg was on when we got her....I switched her straight over to Eukanuba and she has been on that ever since. She is now 2. I think it's such a personal choice, but ok to change when you want as long as you do it slowly. Sometimes it's also a bit of trial and error to see what suits your dog. Don't buy a big bag first until you know it suits them :)

We were given a tub of unnamed patè like stuff that absolutely stank and made Stanley's breath smell disgusting too.

We took him to the vets when we got him to get him registered and checked over and the vet had absolutely no idea what it was. He got switched to James Wellbeloved & has been on it ever since :)

Mine were on Pedigree. I forgot to bring the bag back with Willow so she got switched immediately. When Shadow arrived, he was 14 weeks and I switched him more gradually. I think, once the puppy has settled down into your home, if you're not happy with the food, then change it slowly.

Jessie came home with Symply puppy food and is still on it. It seems to suit her.

No reason to wait a year but I'd give the pup time to settle in and then if poos are all normal and he's well in himself gradually switch over the course of a week or so :)

The breeder had Jenny on Purina puppy chow. I called my vet to see what she would recommend. She recommended 3 different and Eucanuba was the one I chose. She is doing well on it. I left her on the Purina for about a week and then gradually switched her over to the Eucanuba.

under no circumstances change their food it can and will cause upset stomachs there are a lot of makers of food out there I always use eukanuba puppy fed ad lib (at liberty) which means they have always got food in their bowl when they need it and because it's dry food always bowls of fresh water to stop dehydration I also give them a cereal ie wheat-abix etc in milk at breakfast and get them to sit and wait as the first form of training before telling them to get it my dogs grow up to be strong healthy and fit don't read the bag and follow there feeding instructions all dogs are different as are we good luck

I would keep him on the same food for a week or so, while pupster gets used to all the other changes - then gradually change over to your preferred food.

    :)

Haven't collected puppy yet but she will be coming home on Skinners.

Thinking of changing to orijen also as have seen great reviews but Skinners seems to have got good reviews too and is much cheaper.

Have just ordered a sample of orijen for my cat to try so will see what her verdict is haha x

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will see how he is on his food, the breeder said she would order us a bag to take home. If he's ok , I will wait till he's settled, finish the bag and then make the change gradually. It seems that each dog is different and what suits one may not agree with another. I do like the look of Orijen and the ingredients list is impressive, reviews seem great. But I also came across a comment that it has a high percentage of protein that may not be suitable for puppies and so that as food is much better suitable for adult dog. Has anyone got any advice on that? I may ask our vet when we go for the first check.

Plenty of puppies are fed exclusively on a raw diet, so the "high protein" argument doesn't stand up. And you'd feed your pup the "puppy" Orijen anyway, not the adult formula. Unless your pup has issues on the breeder's food (or it's a poor quality food) you don't need to rush to change it, just work your way through the bag you get and start the transition when it gets low (I did it over 2 weeks to play it safe).

And the bonus with the big brands is that they have a money back guarantee, so if the food doesn't agree with your pup they'll refund you. Makes switching to something like Orijen much less worrying.

We love Skinner's for an adult dog. It is very reasonable quality and cheap. Most important is it agrees with Coco.
