So glad she is improving slowly she really is a beautiful girl. Hope she continues to get better every day
Just catching up and have read all this. Firstly so glad Mabel is recovering well, and you sound like you have everything sorted for a very loving recovery. Love this game - have just tried it with my boy using his kibble - and he loved it! Thank you for the idea. Hope Mabel keeps improving x
Sorry for the long post Its now almost 10 weeks post surgery for Mabel so tomorrow we are off to the veterinary hospital for a follow up consultation and X-rays on Mabel's right leg. We have had some very bad dark days when I honestly believed (I wonder some days where all the tears come from) I had made the wrong decision, she has been so fearful of everything, poor little girl. She must have been in so much pain but the good news is she has definitely turned a corner. She is now like a bottle of champagne ready to pop all she wants to do is run and play, Hoolie bum tucks on the lead are the norm. She seems to be walking much better and will bring a toy to play tug with. That seriously makes my heart sing. It truly is so stressful caring for a dog after this type of surgery, mainly because a huge majority of other dog owners allow their dogs to run up to her. Today we went to Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham so we could do some more socialisation, ducks, children, bikes, funfair etc. She spotted 2 "designer dogs" with "designer dressed male owners" and I was able to distract her but when we got round to the other side of the lake they loosened their extendable leads so they could run up to Mabel and then watched smugly as she went way over the threshold. I shouted get your dogs away from mine but I added the naughty word that rhymes with duck in the sentence. OH said he thought there was going to be a fight and he is under no illusion Id have won. I was mad all the way home. Some dogs really do have terrible owners poor things. On a plus note I've met a few kind thoughtful people so all is not lost. Visited loads of cafés and eaten far too much cake, we have been practicing our walking nicely on a lead and fingers crossed will manage our KC silver when we are allowed back to training. I'm going to have a nice glass of wine with my dinner tonight and hope that she will be allowed off lead very soon. Wish us luck and thank you for all the support Claire xx
Ah Claire what a journey ,so glad your're coming out the other side now....sadly there will be other owners that are getting diagnoses like Mabel's all the time ,reading a post like your last one would be so reassuring to them. You've been very honest through all of Mabel's investigations ,treatment and recovery.....it's sometimes made hard reading to see what you've all been going through.Look where you are now, that careful management of her recovery has given her the best chance of a pain free life.Enjoy that wine and eat all the cake you want.....drop a few crumbs for Mabel too! You all deserve it x
Aw, good luck for tomorrow. I can't imagine how stressful it must be for you to have other dogs running up to you when she's in recovery. I'd use the duck word a lot too, I'm sure! I'm sure the other owners have no malice, they just see a lovely dog that they think theirs would have a good time with; most people don't seem to think that it's inappropriate to let your dog run up to another without checking first. Wine and cake is no bad thing when you have to settle your nerves
Sending you the very best wishes for good news soon - you are such a good owner, getting your dog through this.
Although I'm new here I've caught up on much of Mabel's backstory and it's just heartbreaking. I hope you get positive news tomorrow!
Thank you Julie, I always remember when Charlie was going through surgery and how you coped. It has always had such a positive effect on how I can cope. Writing about it hopefully will help others, who may have to deal with a similar situation knowing there is always light at the end of the tunnel, however small
