Wonder if any of you have had this experience. Cooper is 2-1/2 years old.
ALWAYS ran out the door first thing in the morning to poo and pee.
Now not only does he want his breakfast first but, after eating, still does not go out to do his business. WORSE ..he has not pee'd or poo'd since at least 3 or 4PM the day before!! When we are ready to go to day care around 7:30AM, I open the garage door and he flies out and does his thing.
Is it healthy for a dog at any age to hold it for such a long time? What can I do to change this habit? I suffer just thinking about holding it in that long!!!
    Thanks.....

Well, my dog Obi is similar. You have to get him out the door with a crowbar to pee or poo. He can easily hold it from early evening/late afternoon to the next morning...despite opportunities to go outside and lots of encouragement (and us going outside too) he just doesn't want to. During the day Obi can't hold on quite as long, but he can still go for 9 hours without a pee.

I'd just say that as long as....
    - he has constant access to water
    - he has regular opportunities to go outside (even if he chooses not to...)
    - his urine is light coloured (not darker yellow or strong smelling)
    ....then it's fine.

Molly, aged three, goes for about 12 hours overnight as she absolutely hates getting up in the mornings.

Riley won't poo in our garden so he can very occasionally go 24 hours without a poo if for some reason he's not walked in the morning. Even on a normal day he'll go in excess of 12 hours between afternoon/evening walk and his walk next morning. He has plenty of opportunity to go but unless truly desperate or unwell he'll just hang on til he goes out and about.

He does pee in the garden but that's rarely a real empty and more of a marking habit.

Even with soft squishy poop thanks to plum windfall grazing, Lilly still will go ages and ages without going.
Normally poop after tea then nothing (often no pee either) until 7,8,9 next morning after breakfast. Will RARELY "go" before breakfast.
    Odd these dogs.

Doug didn't go for 32 hours when I went into hospital in an emergency . My OH bought him to the hospital and I left the ward to get him to go. I was so worried I taught him to go on command and taught OH get him to go. He seemed fine He was just do upset poor boy. It was so horrible and I made sure it didn't happen again.

We took Annie to France when she was 5 mths old. Although we stopped for her and Fred to have a wee, Fred did, but Annie didn't. When we got to France she still waited although there is a garden at the cottage. She didn't go for 12 hours  but she was fine.

It is amazing how long they can hold it. Simba rarely goes outside first thing, he isn't desperate at all to have a wee. Weird, I say, but oh well.

Brogan and I got stuck in an airplane (he flew in cabin with me) due to that whole ash cloud situation a few years back and he wasn't able to have a wee for 23 hours. It was horrible but what a good boy. When we finally touched down in Munich I swear he weed for 5 minutes straight! There was a little patch of grass right outside the airport door in front of the taxi queue and he had all the taxi drivers doubled over with laughter with his never-ending pee stream.

But of his own choice, especially when older, he would gladly stay in bed than get up to go to the garden. He could have done so whenever he wanted, but often would happily go 18 hours just because he couldn't be bothered to go outside. I called him the "Bladder of Steel". :)

My Pomeranian Odie goes out at 6am then again at about 6pm and if I'm lucky he will go before bed, what ever time that may be. But half the time he will just stand there giving me a look like I'm the crazy one and won't go

It's hard to imagine a dog that only wees a couple of times a day! Can't wait for that stage. Every time I go outside Xena will follow me and go for a wee, but I'm guessing this is just normal puppy behaviour.

Thank you ALL!...I feel relieved that mine is not the only one! Misery loves company??!!!!
Guess I worry about him but he is fine. I call him "camel bladder". He always has access to fresh water, to the outside, and when he pee's close enough I can see that his urine is light colored!! Guess I was used to the "puppy" time when he went out all the time and it has dwindled over time and I am still in the past. He is old enough now to go when he HAS to go and I should stop worrying.....and I will now that I know it happens and it's OK.

Tatze can hold it the clock round. I wanted to train her to use the spending area - no chance! She just held it and held it till I gave in!

Do you think it's due to their shape? We are upright so there will be the pressure of gravity. If we were on all fours maybe we could hold it all day too?

Don't know re shape Mags....maybe! I have tried training Cooper to pee on commend BUT NO WAY! Yes, I reward him for peeing, praise him highly, make a big fuss but it's not happening.
The idea of him going to sleep not having pee'd drives me nuts. Even worse, getting up in the morning and not peeing......what gives???? But, will just leave it at that.....he will pee when he needs to and ditto on pooing. I just want to make sure he has no blockage!!! Ay, ay....these pups sure put us through the wringer!!

Poppy is the same - Mrs Iron Bladder. It drives me crackers, but she never seems to get a bladder infection from holding it in too long, so...

That is, without doubt, one of the more interesting hypothesis touted on here :D:D:D

I think you should walk round on all fours for a day to test it ;)

Having now reached the magic age of XXXX (deleted), I can only say I am VERY ENVIOUS of Pongo's bladder capacity and control.
Maybe I should try the walk-round-on-all-fours-all-day approach.

Your profile says you are two. I must say, you have a fantastic grasp of the language for a two-year-old! :)
