My almost 11 week old puppy is doing great at potty training. She sleeps through the night without needing a potty break (9:30pm-6:30am) and runs to the door and looks at us when she needs to go out. Every once in awhile she will excitement pee or be playing and all the sudden have an accident in the house. My question is more when should I stop watching her like a hawk and when is it realistic for me to have her fully potty trained? I know every puppy is different but I'm just curious when other people took thier eagle eyes off their pupps!
Stryker is 16-ish weeks old. He is pretty much potty trained but he still has an accident once in awhile but that's like your puppy, it happens when he's playing hard or if I ignore him. My issue is he'll go to the back door and bark like he has to go outside and go potty but now he does it every few minutes because he likes being out there so it's hard at times to judge.
Eagle eyes on mine til 6 months! Seemed to take forever, but I think she is in the minority. She was pretty good after about 18-19 weeks but we would have small regressions - up to about 25 weeks. Mostly, it was down to us not managing her properly - thinking the other was taking her out, or not watching the clock close enough (we were on every half hour for ages it seemed). It was around 6 months she started letting us know she needed out every time, consistently (she stands by the the door and cries and tries to get us to follow her to the door if we don't notice her).
My boy was really good at about 12 weeks I think, until he started cocking his leg, then we had one wee in the house (against the fireplace) almost as if to say look what I can do but since then nothing. He is now 7 months old but the fireplace pee was about 3 weeks ago, so fingers crossed he was just boasting
Eagle eyes on mine till about 5 months with the understanding the odd mistake or excitement pee or poop could still happen till about a year old. Till old age ailments set in then start watching all over again.
Xena had no accidents between 13 weeks-5 months then BAM the cat got her all excited one night and she did a massive wee on the carpet. She did have a couple of small accidents in her crate during the day at 4.5 months, but in hindsight it was because she hadn't emptied properly before I put her in. Pippa does say on the main site that you can't expect a pup to be reliable until 6 months!
Yep, about 5 months. Charlie had his last 'accident' at round about 5 months then was pretty reliable. Betsy seems about the same.
Bessie at 13 weeks is now reliably whining/pawing at door for poop. Not yet for pee during the day -- that still requires watching and taking her out often, but we're down to 0-2 accidents in the house per day. She paces and sniffs for a little before peeing but once in a while I don't catch her in time. She sleeps on the bed w/me from around 11pm to 7am without peeing in the house. No crate. She wakes me up by coming over to me around 7am and I take her out then.
Willow wasn't entirely trustworthy until about 6 months - she was a slow learner! Shadow was almost 100% when he came to us at 14 weeks, despite not having been a house puppy. Even then, we found some situations a new challenge - for example, a friend's house, where they had a big rug and a puppy. Obviously no Simple Solution, so it wasn't "dog nose clean", and they took it to be the right place to pee, so needed watching when we went visiting. I was also very careful anywhere we went with carpet, because they're not used to it and it can confuse them a bit. Then there are places with different rules - my two are allowed to go anywhere outside, but when we visit other people's places, they often don't let the dogs "go" inside the boundaries of their properties, even where it's outside, so it can be confusing for our two, who have to then learn that this outside isn't for weeing - only once we're through the gate!
Not sure I'd call Libby's 'accidents', more like sheer bloody-minded 'I'll just go right here, what you going to do about it' wees!! She's 18 weeks now and probably wees on the carpet every day (in different places) and jumped up and did it on the spare bed yesterday. Grrrrr
If your 4.5 month old puppy is weeing on carpets and beds every day, I'd be tempted to go back to basics for a bit. My 5 month old puppy, although seemingly pretty reliable now, is still not allowed on carpet unless I know she is empty. She certainly is not allowed on beds, and certainly not soft furnishings unless I absolutely know she is empty. It'll be another month yet before I don't put her in a crate if she hasn't had a pee rather than let her wander round on carpet.
Sparky is a little over 12 weeks now. With the occasional accidents inside his playpen he has not peed in his crate in a long time. Today after his kong dinner he went to jump at me behind his playpen and when I told him to sit since I don't want him putting his paws up his pen, he zoomed right into his crate and peed. I know I missed a sign, but he didn't have to to his crate to do it. Still a long way before hes potty trained.
Nor is Libby Not beds, sofas or even, supposedly upstairs. She just jumped up and went. No matter how much training and success I have praising her staying on the floor despite temptations she just loses it when not 'training' specifically. She's doing well really, much better generally but these things just make me lose my cool a bit! Hence, the one step forward, two steps back thread being so apt!
