we have had so many accidents the last 2 days. She can go between 1-2 hours if she is out with me Socialising or in the car but seems to be going every 20-40 mins at home and it seems hard to predict. She is also doing a small wee outside at times and coming in and going 10 mins later. We use a special pet wee cleaner and she seems to go in a different place each time. Is this normal? Any tips appreciated.
House training is hard and as they are all different it is hard to predict. Are you making sure she is empty before coming back inside? They can do several small wees before they are empty. Do you treat for weeing outside? We did with both lots of praise and treats. Bailey seemed to get the idea at home fairly quickly but was a nightmare if we were anywhere else, we had to watch him constantly and we soon picked up on his "tell" which was, and still is, a children of the corn stare! Maybe after being outside when you come in carry her around for a while and then go back outside for another wee break? Sure soeone more experienced will be along to help more.
We haven't been treating as I wasn't sure if you should. Will try that as she catches on to all other aspects of training with treats. She is always hungry. X
I was just wondering how old is your puppy? It is very normal for a young puppy to need to go every 15 minutes, their little bladders can't last much longer. As they develop they learn to hold a little longer and also learn where their den is. When my girl was tiny I would take her outside every 15 minutes to start with, always after a meal, after any exciting play. Puppies naturally do not see when being carried which is why she can last so long. Does she have the run of the whole house? If so I would try and confine her to one room at the moment gradually increasing the space. She will then be able to associate the space to being her den, puppies naturally keep their den clean. I know it feels as if this will go on forever, it really won't. Good luck.
@Pilatelover she is 12 weeks on Monday. She was going every 45-60 mins at home for a week or so And this has taken me by surprise. She is crate training and only has the run of one (large) room.
If it makes you feel any better, Xena was a every 20 minute wee-er until 12 weeks. 30 minutes if I was really lucky. Then at 12 weeks it was like a switch flicked and suddenly she was able to hold on for an hour or more - it felt like such an achievement! I think it's just a matter of consistency, lots of rewards, and waiting for their little bladders to grow. But oh do I remember the frustration of having the dog do a massive puddle mere minutes after doing a massive wee outside. So SO annoying.
When we first brought our puppy home I treated EVERY time she went out. She is 12 weeks and we are at almost 2 weeks accident free. She goes to the door and whines when she has to go out. I still treat sporadically since she is very food modivation. Also, using a word cue really helped us. She will almost always wee when I say "go potty".
Oh yes that's puppies for you, just when you think you have it all sorted they put a spanner in the works. I always think there is nothing wrong with going back to the beginning where training is concerned. I think you are doing all the right things, it just takes time.
Treating will really help them associate weeing outside is a good thing. If she has an accident inside don't berate her as she may then go in places you can't see. Just clean it up and pop outside with her 10 mins later. Unfortunately it will be a few more weeks but they do catch on quicker with treats and lots of excited fuss.
