Hi All Its 2am here in the U.K. and ive had a grand total of 0 hours sleep. Today Rolo was itching himself a lot more than yesterday around his neck, biting his paws intently until he cried. I thought it may just be wet grass or Something but when I put him to bed in his crate he did not stop itching biting and howling in what sounded like pain. I ended up sitting downstairs with him from 11pm-2am and I was so tired I needed to come to bed so I've re crated him and he just won't settle at all, he's itching and scratching a lot and the crying too. Do you think it's for attention as it stopped for a while when we were downstairs I'm taking him the vet tomorrow for a check up. I wanted to try the crate further away tomorrow night too but I don't know if I should Thanks
I would not say this has anything to do with trying to get attention. Sounds to me like he's got an allergy to something and the itching is really driving him mad, poor thing ! Definitely a visit to the vet ASAP. Do you have an emergency vet you could call? I only ask as you can give some human antihistamines to dogs that could give him some relief and maybe allow you to get some sleep but as he is a puppy I wouldn't give anything without a chat with a vet first. Hope you can get some sleep - no fun for either of you!
No, this isn't attention-seeking. He's itching because he's really itchy. It's good that you're seeing the vet tomorrow. He must be miserable. Let us know how you get on at the vets. You being with him probably gave him a welcome distraction but once you left he had nothing to do but focus on the itch again.
Thank you both very much I didn't think it wasn but I'm new to this. I'm back downstairs with him the poor little thing. He seems to have settled laying on a cold floor. And I'm going to try sleep on the sofa for a few hours I called the emergency vet before. They said a cool bath and if really bad give him half a pyriton tablet. Hopefully he is okay it must be awful for him, thanks again for the help
We have had a problem with harvest mites this month and the vet said they have been terrible this year. The spot on flea treatments don't work. Was driving mole mad (feet, nose, ears) and they gave us a spray to use worked immediately. They are tiny (orangey red colour). Don't know if that's what's wrong but thought I'd share anyway. Hey Sam and Mole Thanks for the advice we actually thought that this morning we had a garden party last month and all of our guests were covered in bites sic the penny dropped before it could be that? Do you know what the spray was or anything so I can speak with the vets? I thought it was the grass at first but I don't think it is that Xx
Ah poor Rolo,bless him ,you sitting with him must have given him a lot of comfort.I hope you can get relief for him and both get caught up on your sleep x
He's much better thank you all. He's a little drowsy off the antihistamines but seems more himself and has a little play now hopefully he will get some sleep tonight!
I was just about to ask a question about intense itching and found this thread! Poor Archie is scratching himself silly. We can't even pet him without the back leg going into scratch mode. I see that you had some success with antihistamines. I'm thinking I will be calling our vet ASAP. The anti-itch spray and oatmeal bath certainly haven't done the trick for our boy. I hope that Rolo is still feeling better and more himself! Deb
Hi Deb How old is archie? The antihistamines worked to a degree but I don't want him drowsy all the time you see as he's supposed to be a little full of energy puppy. I have read salmon oil is good for itching if you wanted to research that as I'll probably be looking at that next I hope Archie feels better soon x
If your dog is taking Piriton then that can make them drowsy. There are other more 'modern' antihistamines available that have different active ingredients. Our dog takes Zyrtec, the human variety (2 tablets a day) and this doesn't make him sleepy at all. Worth chatting to your vet about the options...
Poor puppy. Glad to hear he's feeling a bit more comfortable. Have you been able to identify the cause of the itching? My Dad's dog was put on steroids for years only for them to work out by chance when they moved that he was allergic to the type of grass in the garden.
I feel so awful for our poor Snowie, he is very itchy -- now controlled with steroids after trying everything -- he can't take antihistamines as he is epileptic and he had a seizure after taking Allergex. He's on a very low dose prednisone (1.25gm) every other day, and if I remember, I put cortisone cream on his tummy before our walk (otherwise he licks it off) and it is very effective. I have read that topical cortisone has less negative side effects than taking a tablet. I am pretty sure he is allergic to grass because he gets itchy on his elbows, chest, tummy, and paws, and under his chin. We now feed him on our patio to keep him off the grass but he likes to take his bone onto the lawn and also likes to suntan midmorning on the lawn. Incidentally @Deb - Archie's Human, Snowie was originally named Archie! The breeder had named all the pups with "A" names. Archie and Rolo are so similar in colour to Snowie -- I wonder whether our white dogs are more itchy than their black and chocolate and darker yellow counterparts?
Im sorry poor snowy is itchy It must not be nice for you or him! We were thinking it was Grass he was allergic to however his paws and elbows etc arent red or itchy so im hoping its just effects of mites or something. would hate for the poor thing to be allergic to grass my last dog was bless him and it was so sad to see. Snowie is gorgeous looking dog his head looks so big, I can imagine Rolo to take after him!!
